What are contra-indications?

Contra-indications are precautions that need to be considered prior to working with essential oils. So whenever you are making a product using essential oils, for yourself, member of your family, friend or client, you must always take into account the following contra-indications.

You should always take into account the following contra-indications: Skin sensitivities and allergies - a client may have sensitive skin or be allergic to an essential oil. Always patch test prior to using a new product, if treating someone new to aromatherapy or if there is any concern that there may be an adverse reaction. What is a patch test?

Pregnancy - some essential oils should not be used during pregnancy Pregnancy - some essential oils should not be used during pregnancy. Always check your chosen oils prior to application. Avoid throughout pregnancy due to their strong emmenagogue properties; Aniseed, Basil, Bay, Camphor, Cinnamon, Clove, Hyssop, Lemongrass, Nutmeg, Parsley, Sage, Tarragon, Thyme and Pennyroyal. Avoid during the first trimester if they are slightly emmenagogue because they may affect hormone levels; Angelica, Cajeput, Caraway, Carrot Seed, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Coriander, Cumin, Fennel, Jasmine, Juniper, Marjoram, Melissa, Myrrh, Peppermint, Rosemary and Spearmint. Breastfeeding - some essential oils should not be used during breastfeeding as they will enter the bloodstream particularly Peppermint and Sage. Always check your chosen oils prior to application.

Epilepsy - some oils are stimulants and therefore could encourage an epileptic fit. Always check your chosen oils prior to application. There are a few essential oils that contain certain Ketones which are potentially neurotoxic, they can pass through the blood-brain barrier and affect the central nervous system. This means they could trigger a fit. The essential oils to avoid are; Anise, Camphor, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Hyssop, Nutmeg, Rosemary, Sage and Grapefruit. Blood pressure - sedative oils can contribute to low blood pressure and stimulants can contribute to high blood pressure. Always check your chosen oils prior to application. Small babies and children - do not use essential oils on babies or small children.

What is a Contra- action? Also known as 'the healing crisis' - Contra-actions can occur during or after a treatment therefore it is vital to give the appropriate after care advice. A contra-action can occur after an aromatherapy massage treatment but it can also occur after applying an aromatherapy product. Examples are; redness (erythema), headache, tiredness, maybe go to the loo a bit more often, sore muscles. Most contra-actions can occur after an aromatherapy massage. But it is also important to be aware of this when applying a product.
