Essential Questions About Economics Incorporating Civics Into a History or Social Studies Class with a Thematic Approach

Why are some people rich and some people poor? What explanations can you give for why some people are rich and some people are poor? To what extent are these things in their control and to what extent are these things out of their control?

What do Americans owe each other? Are we on our own or are we part of a community? Did those who “made it” make it on their own? Or do they owe society for their success? Are we obligated to give to help other people who are in need of help? Can you be successful even if the rest of your society is unsuccessful?

Is the American economy fair? Does everyone have an equal shot to get ahead? Do certain people have advantages or disadvantages? Are the “rules of the game” – the laws and regulations governing the economy – fair to everyone?

Wrap Up Writing Assignment Based on today’s discussion, answer the question, “Is the economy fair?” Support your answer with three explanations for why some people are rich and some people are poor. Wrap Up Writing Assignment
