Management Skills Leadership, Motivation and Communication Leadership: Influencing people, giving direction and make staff work as a team Motivation: using tactics to keep staff happy and working well Communication: Gather and send information, listen to sort out problems with staff and decisions

Leadership Authoritarian: Dominant leader. His way. Participate or democratic: Delegates and involves employees. More ideas etc. Free-Rein: Freedom to do their own thing Charismatic: Admire and look up to him/her so they work hard. Giving directions and Delegating responsibilities (tasks of leaders)

Motivation Those factors that drive us to work hard to achieve goals and objectives. How motivate? Pay, Reward, Compliment, promotion, delegate responsibility(empowerment) Theory x: people have to be forced to work and no one likes there job??? Theory y: With extra responsibilities and encouragement workers can work better.

Motivation Limited solution, Not enough factors dealt with, Are workers who are starving or insecure in their job going to worry about self development and responsibility?

Maslow’s Theory of Motivation Once our basic needs are satisfied we are motivated to move up to a higher need. Can be motivated by one or 5 needs at the same time. To get the best from workers Maslow believes that managers must meet each of his 5 ideas on needs. Practice drawing the hierarchy Less Industrial disputes and more innovation/ideas.

Communications The process of exchanging information to encourage action. Sender (Noise) Receiver Clearly sent then received and understood? To get info, orders, decisions, problem solve, answer questions, and complaints Clear written communication and effective non-verbal communication

Communication Absorb data and filter out useless information. (NB for life) Use language that your audience can understand. E.g presentation to TCD students different to presentation to primary kids Negotiating and selling. Advertising Medium: e-mail, speech, phone, letter Channel: Who are you going to send the message through. Staff direct or through another manager.

What are your life goals ? E.g; Mine are to help O’Dwyer's win a league or championship and to be one of their best players and coaches. To loose another half a stone of fat and replace it with solid muscle. To win more titles as a coach. To get the U18 school GAA team to preform their best. To build my own house and garden. For my trad band to play to a bigger audience. To make my website global by translating it into different languages. To be a good husband and god willing a good father. To be a better teacher. To improve that bit extra every year. For my students to achieve their potential in every way not just exams. To improve politics in Ireland. To make more money to give away to charity and to help more people generally. To do what I can to help the environment
