Integers

Green counters = positive numbers = + 3 Red counters = negative numbers = -3

1 green counter and 1 red counter together – cancel each other out x x x x x x

Adding Integers

Adding Integers – Same Signs + 3 3 green + 2 green = 5 green + + +3 + +2 = +5 + 2

Adding Integers – Same Signs - 4 + + 4 red + 1 red = 5 red - 1 -4 + -1 = -5

Adding Integers – Different Signs x x 1 green and 1 red will cancel each other out (zero pair) + 3 + + x x 1 green (1 positive) remains - 2 +3 + -2 = +1

Adding Integers – Different Signs x x 1 green and 1 red will cancel each other out + 2 + + 1 red (1 negative) remains x x - 3 +2 + -3 = -1

Adding Integers – Different Signs x x 1 green and 1 red will cancel each other out + 4 + + 2 green (2 positive) remain x x - 2 +4 + -2 = +2

Adding Integers – Different Signs x 1 green and 1 red will cancel each other out + 1 3 red (3 negative) remains + + x +1 + -4 = -3 - 4

Add the numbers and keep the sign Rule for same signs: Positive +Positive = Positive Negative Negative + Negative = Add the numbers and keep the sign

Rule for different signs: Positive + Negative or Negative + Positive Subtract and take the sign of the higher number

Rule for adding integers: Same signs, add and keep Different signs, subtract Take the sign of the higher one, then you’ll be exact
