Jan 2018 Background The single band WUR PPDU waveform is supposed to be generated by using contiguous 13 subcarriers with subcarrier spacing of 312.5 KHz and with the center subcarrier nulled [1]. However, it is implementation-specific how to actually generate the time-domain waveform according to [1]. There was a proposal to mandate a sequence occupying the contiguous 13 subcarriers during the discussion in the last Nov. F2F meeting [2], but majority seemed to support describing how to generate the waveform in detail only as an example in the Spec text. There are three different WUR PPDU waveform generation methods discussed in the TGba [3-5]. Junghoon Suh, et. al, Huawei

3 different WUR PPDU waveform generation Jan 2018 3 different WUR PPDU waveform generation Method 1: Time-domain Masking based (for high data rate) [3] The contiguous middle 13 subcarriers out of 20 MHz 64 subcarriers are occupied with a certain sequence The 64 point IFFT is taken for the 20 MHz 64 subcarriers, and then the last 16 samples of the 64 samples are pre-pended to the 64 samples in order to create a 4 usec long time domain waveform Masking is applied in the time-domain to generate the “2 usec ON (OFF) – 2 usec OFF (ON)” Manchester coded pulse The time domain waveform generated above can be stored in a memory space and retrieved every time 250 Kbps high data rate WUR PPDU waveform is transmitted. Method 2: FFT based (for high data rate) [4] The contiguous middle 7 subcarriers (every other tone of 312.5 KHz spacing based middle 13 tones) out of 20 MHz subcarriers are occupied with a certain sequence The 32 point IFFT is taken for the 20 MHz subcarriers, and then the last 8 samples of the 32 samples are pre-pended to the 32 samples in order to create a 2 usec long time domain waveform. The 2 usec long time domain waveform generated above constitutes the ON portion of a Manchester coded pulse for 250 Kbps WUR PPDU waveform Junghoon Suh, et. al, Huawei

Method 3: Constellation based [5] Jan 2018 Method 3: Constellation based [5] The contiguous middle 13 subcarriers out of 20 MHz subcarriers are occupied with a certain sequence The 64 point IFFT is taken for the 20 MHz 64 subcarriers, and then 16 zero samples are pre-pended to the 64 samples in order to create a 4 usec long time domain waveform To generate Information bit “0” and Information bit “1” Manchester-coded OOK symbols,  an M-QAM (e.g, M=64) sequence, as given in [5], is utilized for information bit “0” and reverse order of that sequence for information bit “1”. The first 2-usec and the second 2-usec of 4-usec waveform correspond to ON/OFF or OFF/ON portion of a Manchester coded pulse for 250 Kbps WUR PPDU waveform The time domain waveform generated above can also be stored in a memory space and retrieved every time 250 Kbps high data rate WUR PPDU waveform is transmitted. Junghoon Suh, et. al, Huawei

Jan 2018 Summary The WUR PPDU waveform generation is fundamental in the TGba PHY/MAC schemes and technologies. However, it is missing in the SFD without detail descriptions. It is observed that we may have the following three options to fill-in the missing part in the SFD and D0.1. Option 1: All the WUR waveform generation procedures need to be specified in detail including the FFT size, the value of all the coefficients, and how the multicarrier waveform is modulated by the OOK signal Option 2: All the WUR waveform generation procedures need to be specified, including the FFT size, the list of which coefficients are non-zero, and how the multicarrier waveform is modulated by the OOK signal, except for the values of the coefficients. The standard would include on example set of coefficients, but other coefficient values would be allowed by the standard. Option 3: Any of the WUR waveform generation procedure does not have to be specified except for the following which is already decided When a single band is used for transmission of WUR PPDU, the OOK waveform of WUR PPDU is generated by using contiguous 13 subcarriers with the subcarrier spacing of 312.5 kHz In this case, it is strongly recommended to describe detail generation procedures including the coefficients as examples Number of procedures TBD Junghoon Suh, et. al, Huawei
