Classifying Chemical Reactions Chemical reactions are often classified to highlight patterns in chemical behavior. In some cases, categorizing a reaction.
TYPES OF REACTIONS. SYNTHESIS Synthesis A + B  AB Reactants: 2 elements or 2 compounds (usually molecular) Products: One compound Example: 2Mg + O 2.
CHEMICAL REACTIONS Chapter 7. Chemical Equations Reactants  Products In a chemical reaction, the substances that undergo change are called reactants.
What are the Types of Chemical Reactions? 1. Synthesis Reaction 2. Decomposition Reaction 3. Single Replacement Reaction 4. Double Replacement Reaction.
Reaction Types. Complete Combustion Oxygen combines with a hydrocarbon to form water and carbon dioxide and produces heat. General form: C x H x + O 2.
Type of ReactionDefinition  Equation Synthesis Involves two or more substances combining to form one new compound? Decomposition Involves a single compound.
Chemical Reactions The 5 Basic Classifications SYNTHESIS A reaction in which two or more reactants yield a single product. Also called composition or.
We know the signs that a chemical reaction has occurred, but how do we know what is going on the molecular/atomic level (i.e., how do we know what compounds.
Chemical Reactions. In a chemical reaction, atoms are rearranged to form new compounds. The starting substances = reactants Ending substances = products.
Types of Chemical Reactions.  There are 4 types of chemical reactions. 1. Synthesis Reaction 2. Decomposition Reaction 3. Single Replacement Reaction.

FIVE TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS Chapter 8 section 3

Most often produces C02 and H20 Example: 1. Combustion Needs oxygen Most often produces C02 and H20 Example: AB + O2  C02 + H20 + heat

2. Combination Two or more compounds/elements combine to form one. Example A + B  AB

3. Decomposition One compound breaks into 2- 3 compounds/ elements. Involves heat or electrical current Example AB  A + B Q

4. Single Replacement Reactants exchange partners – one change Example A + BC  AC + B

5. Double Replacement Reactants exchange partners- 2 changes Example AB + CD  AD + BC
