Eisenhower and the Cold War

I. Brinkmanship Prevent the spread of communism by promising to use all military force, including nuclear weapons, against any aggressor nation

II. Warsaw Pact, 1953 In response to W. Germany joining NATO the Soviets form their own military alliance with 7 other E. European nations.

III. New Soviet Leadership Nikita Khrushchev favored a policy of peaceful coexistence in which the two powers would compete economically and scientifically.

IV. The Space race Soviet Union takes an early lead with the launch of Sputnik. (the worlds first artificial satellite.)

V. A U-2 is shot down! Khrushchev calls off peace talks and the 1960s opened with tension between the two superpowers as great as ever.
