Riveted connections Types of rivets Types of riveted joints Riveting & process Failure of riveted joints

Rivet A rivet is made out of round bar of steel or wrought iron , one end is head , the other end is tail . The middle portion is known as shank. Size of rivet is expressed by the diameter of the shank.

Types of rivets Shop Rivets:For fabrication when rivets are driven in the fabricating shop are known as Shop Rivets . Shop Rivets are stronger then field rivets. Field Rivets:When rivets driven in the field at site during the erection of structure are called Field Rivets. Hot driven Rivets:When the hot rivets fitted cools its shrinks & presses the plates together. These rivets are known as Hot driven Rivets. Cold driven Rivets:A rivet that is driven cold ,without pre-heating is known as Cold driven Rivets.

Rivets are classified acc. To shape

Riveting & process Riveting: The process of joining to or more than two parts by means of rivet by giving the final shape of rivet head on both sides to act as a prominent fastener is known as Riveting. Process: In this process the diameter of the rivet hole is kept slightly more than the rivet shank & the rivet is inserted from the bottom side as show on.The rivet is made red hot & inserted into the holes in the plates . The other end of the rivet is then formed by means of rivet hammering tool known as dolly by means of electric hammering .

Types of riveted joints Lap Joints: A lap joints is a connection in which the members joined lap or over lap on each other is known as Lap joints. These are classified into two types: Single Riveted lap joint Double Riveted lap joint Butt Joints: A butt joint is a connection in which the members join ,come together or butt against each other. Single cover butt joint Double cover butt joint

Failure of riveted joints Shear failure of rivets Shear failure of plates Tearing failure of plates

Bearing failure of plates Bearing failure of Rivets Splitting failure of plates at the edges

Important terms use in riveting Pitch(p): The pitch of the rivets is the center to center distance between two consecutive rivets. Gauge line: Gauge line is the line of rivets which is parallel to the direction of stress. Gauge distance(g): The normal distance between two adjacent gauge line is called Gauge distance. Nominal diameter: The nominal diameter of the rivet is the diameter of the cold rivet before driving (d). Diagonal pitch: The distance between the centre of a rivet in one row & that of the nearest rivet in the next row in riveted joint. Gross diameter: The gross diameter of the rivet is the diameter of the rivet-after driving and the diameter of the rivet hole is adopted as the gross diameter after rivet.
