How to Get Interviews and Turn Them Into Job Offers Greg Dillon Director of Business Development Georgia Tech College of Management Hello! Welcome to “How to get interviews and turn them into job offers” My name is Greg Dillon and (as of 8 weeks ago) I am the Director of Business Development for the Georgia Tech College of Management This is going to be a very interactive workshop, so I hope that you didn’t come to just sit and listen! We’re here to help you get interviews that you can turn into job offers! How many of you are currently out of a job (raise hands)? Keep them up (don’t be ashamed!) if it’s been 1 month?/2 months?/3 months? – etc. (find out who has been the longest) and give them a chocolate bar – and a standing ovation! When we lose a job it’s often embarrassing. I’ve been a job-search expert for many years and I found myself searching for a new job, after getting laid off, twice in an 18-month period! I decided to not be ashamed, but to go public with it. How public……………………………?

Tell the story. I had worked in a very stable situation for over 10 years. I got laid off in 2007 and in that 10 week period, I had 29 interviews 18 different companies Ended up with 3 different job offers – when hired I experienced a $53,000 salary increase Unfortunately, 14 months later I was laid off once again. This last time, in spite of the economy, I ended up in the best job of my life!! You can too – do you believe that?!

Out of a job… a blessing or a curse? “A pilot was flying in a plane – That’s good. No that’s bad – his engines stopped working! That’s bad. No, that’s good – he had a parachute. No that’s bad – his parachute wouldn’t open! No that’s good – he was directly over a haystack! No that’s bad – there was a pitchfork in the haystack! No, that’s good – he missed the pitchfork! No that’s bad – he missed the haystack! Normally, that’s the end – but I added two more lines – That’s bad. No that’s good – he landed………….a new job!!!

What are you doing now to get interviews? So now you find yourself needing to get interviews in order to get a new job! What are you doing now to get interviews? How is it working? Why do you think it’s not working?

Where are you looking? Where are you looking? Are you only looking at the “visible” job market? Why?!?!?! Do you love extreme competition? Are your credentials far superior to everyone else’s out there? Do you really trust that the HR tools and processes always surface the best people?

Focus on Informational Interviews! How many of you love to “Network”? (This is not “networking”) Somebody explain how this is different from traditional “networking”?

Know Thyself …and Repackage Thyself …and Sell Thyself 1) How well do you really know yourself? Skills Strengths Weaknesses Accomplishments What differentiates you from others 2) How effective are you at “repackaging” yourself? Or are you just whatever your job title is? (Ask someone what their job title is. Then ask them to forget about their job title and tell me what they can do for me as a business owner) 3) How do you sell yourself in an interview? (I am interested in buying a car - ask someone to sell me a car in 1-2 sentences) Who asks the questions in an interview? Who asks them first? Why? How can you ask the first question and get valuable information? How does asking several good questions cause you to come across to the employer? What does not sell you effectively in an interview? Lack of vulnerability Being “too vulnerable” Blind, clueless confidence

Job offers are about trust!
