Family Engagement Felipe: My goal at LACOE: serve at-risk students. LACOE students everyone’s students= ELs, Title I, Special Needs, Newcomers, Trafficked, Foster, Delinquent. Our students: Learn within the confines of juvenile halls, detention camps, and county community schools. Audacious goal, prior job Vs LACOE 4,000 sq miles in the County of Los Angeles. Students come from some of most underserved and violent neighborhoods in Los Angeles High poverty rates Declining funding for schools Chronically underperforming schools Low parental involvement Gangs that recruit our youth. Minors who have made really really bad decisions like luring a best friend into the Asuza mountains, to see her get killed by the local gang; or the student who couldn’t remember how she made it from Los Angeles to an Arizona police station when her dad questioned her after paying bail. Your role = Make sure that our students are achieving at national standards. XXX% of our students have special needs XXX% are below grade level in English and in math; 100% percent ere living below the poverty level; 100% are living without their parents. Vision Rami Geographical disparities in access for families and students I Chicago study (A study that followed families’ mobility from low poverty neighborhoods to similar areas and to more affluent suburban areas showed that the just by moving to a nicer area, 54% of the students attended college, compared to only 21% in the group of families who moved to similar neighborhoods.
