METEOSAT SECOND GENERATION MONITORING OF URBAN HEAT ISLANDS (MSG) MONITORING OF URBAN HEAT ISLANDS Author: Jochen Kerkmann kerkmann@eumetsat.de

Urban Heat "Islands" Urban heat "islands" can be observed with the channel IR3.9 under clear sky conditions, especially during the night-time hours; Channel IR3.9 has a strong response to sub-pixel land-surface temperature variations in urban areas (see also fire detection); Higher temperature difference between city and surroundings measured at night at 3.9 m than at 10.8 m;

Urban Heat "Islands" (Summer) London MSG-1 14 July 2003 02:00 UTC BT Channel 04 (3.9 m) Paris: 287 K Surrounding: 281 K Paris Lyon

Urban Heat "Islands" (Summer) London MSG-1 14 July 2003 02:00 UTC BT Channel 09 (10.8 m) Paris: 291 K Surrounding: 286 K Note: over Central Europe channel IR3.9 is about 4-5 K colder than channel IR10.8 because of CO2 absorption Paris Lyon

Urban Heat "Islands" (Summer) Ruhrgebiet MSG-1 14 July 2003 02:00 UTC BT Channel 04 (3.9 m) Upper Rhein Valley
