How do organisms respond to change? Chapter 1.5 How do organisms respond to change?

Stimulus & Response STIMULUS- a change that causes a response RESPONSE- a reaction to the stimulus

Examples of stimulus and response: Organisms respond to stimuli in different ways. 1. an alarm goes off in the morning (stimulus), and you wake up (response). 2. plants tend to turn into the sun because they need energy from the sun. The sun is a stimulus, and turning into the sun is a response.

Behavior Behavior is the way in which an organism responds to stimuli. Instinct - a behavior that an organism is born with. Blinking an eye, breathing, hunting for other animals is called instinct. But, combing hair, washing hands, cooking is a learned behavior.

Behaviors: 2 kinds Instinct: behavior an organism is born with ex. blinking eyes, building nests etc. Learned: behavior that is learned ex. Tying shoes, reading, talking etc.

Animal behaviors: Migration Hibernation

Animal Behavior Animals move from one place to another and back again. It’s called migration. A good example of migration is birds. Birds fly to warmer places during the cold months to find food.

Hibernation HIBERNATION- some animals spend their winter sleeping. It’s called hibernation. During hibernation, the body of animal is not active. The temperature slows down and the heartbeat slows down. An example of animals that hibernate is chipmunks and squirrels.

Review: A flower slowly turns to face the sun Review: A flower slowly turns to face the sun. What is the stimulus and what is the response?

Turtles already know how to find food themselves Turtles already know how to find food themselves. Is this a learned behavior or instinct?

What is hibernation?

Checking concepts: 1. A change that causes a response is called _______________________. 2. The ways in which living things respond to stimuli is called ______________________. 3. Behaviors that an animals is born with are called _____________________. 4. The seasonal movement of animals from one place to another and back again is called ______________________. 5. The inactive state of some animals during the winter months is called _________________. 6. During hibernation, an animal’s activities ___________.
