Influences on Cognitive & Social Development Human Development Influences on Cognitive & Social Development

When do peers start having an influence? Think back to your childhood What was the earliest interaction you remember having with a peer? Was it cooperative or conflictive? Did you ever play pretend? What role(s) did you tend you occupy? What objects did you use to stand in for reality? Were you ever rejected by a peer/group? How did that transpire/does it still affect you? Did you ever invent a game unique to you or peer group? How did you know/enforce the rules?

Play Historical view – play is worthless and frivolous Kids as mini-adults Now – assimilation of ideas, schema formation, practice, active- not passive engagement, social benefits, conflict resolution, creativity, problem-solving and on and on Definition – enjoyable activity that is unrelated to survival, production or profit

Day Care and Attachment Quality day care that consists of responsive adults interacting with children does not harm children’s thinking and language skills. However, some studies suggest that extensive time in day care can increase aggressiveness and defiance in children.

Separation Anxiety Separation anxiety peaks at 13 months of age, regardless of whether the children are home or sent to day care.
