Improving Public Worship: Prayer God’s people should strive to give Him their very best in everything. Our efforts in public worship are no exception. How can we improve our prayers in public worship?

The New Testament is our Guide to Acceptable Worship The scriptures inform our worship! (2 Tim. 3:16-17) Worship to God from His people is predicated on the unity of His people! (Matthew 5:23-24; 1 John 4:20) The forms of acceptable worship are determined by God (John 4:24; Psalm 89:7; Eccl. 5:1; Matt. 15:9) What? Who? When? Where? How?

What is prayer? Communicating to God An admission of our inadequacy (Philippians 4:6) Not an attempt to impress men, but to implore God (Matthew 6:5; Mark 12:38-40)

Who is to pray? One who can truly call on God as Father! (Luke 11:2; 1 John 3:10) The righteous (1 Peter 3:12; 2 Chronicles 7:14) Men in the worship assembly (1 Tim 2:8; 1 Cor. 14:34; Nehemiah 8:6)

When should we pray? Always! We are to be persistent! (Luke 18:1-7; 11:5-13; Ephesians 6:18-19) We are to pray continually! (1 Thess. 5:17; Romans 12:12; Colossians 4:2 )

Where should we pray? Men are to pray everywhere! (1 Timothy 2:8) In the assembly of the church! (1 Corinthians 14:15-16; Acts 4:31; 12:5)

How are we pray? Prepare with forethought. Consider the purpose of the prayer in the context of the order of worship. Pray with the understanding and to be understood! Enable fellow worshipers to give their wholehearted assent!

We are blessed to have God near to us! Prayer Prayer in the worship assembly is a unified expression of the desires of the local church to God “Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like- minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:5-6) We are blessed to have God near to us! “What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way our Lord is near us whenever we pray to him…” (Deut. 4:7, NIV)
