Warm Up 11 4/21 1. Factor that causes population growth to decrease 2. Density-DEPENDENT factors affect populations that are (large/dense or small/scattered) 3. What is an example of a density-independent factor? 4. April 22nd is Earth Day to support environmental protection. What will you do this week to help our Earth? List as many as you want but be sure you can do it for the whole week!

Biodiversity & the Future The Earth holds a variety of species & resources. Humans can have a direct influence on these things.

Biodiversity Def: the sum total of the genetically based variety of all organisms in the biosphere Def: Variety of life in an area determined by the # of different species in that area. Earth’s greatest natural resources Provides medicine Provides food and goods

Ecosystem diversity- variety of habitats, communities Species diversity- number of different species Genetic diversity- different forms of genetic information

Threats to Biodiversity Extinction- species disappears from all/part of its range Endangered species- in danger of extinction

Habitat fragmentation Ecosystem splits into pieces

Hunting for sport, food, medicinal purposes

Pollution Biological magnification – harmful substances increase in organisms at higher trophic levels
