Advance human rights and social and economic justice. Competency # 5 Advance human rights and social and economic justice.

Generalist Practice Behaviors 5.1 Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination * I am to be educated and aware of the issues the women at the shelter encounter regarding opression and discrimination

Friend to Friend Women’s Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Shelter WE DON’T DISCRIMINATE NOR OPPRRESS

WE DO OFFER FREE ACCESS TO FOOD, CLOTHING AND SHELTER FOR ALL RACES, COLORS , CREEDS AND KINDS

GENERALIST PRACTICE CONT.

Case Study There was a husband and wife who came into the office separately to file Restraining Orders against one another

Cont. The father expressed he had sever PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome). He expressed he has suicidal tendencies However He feels his wife is trying to have him killed He is not getting counseling or on any medicines to help control these symptoms

Cont. They share a five year old son whom he has requested custody of Because he feels he is the better parent and can provide a roof over the child’s head

Our Dilemma We had team meetings to decide our level of advocacy for human rights and social and economic justice we could do for the safety of the child If when he filed the paperwork with the clerk of court and the judge granted him temporary custody of the child and the emergency restraint order would the child be safe with the father

WE DID CALL SOCIAL SERVICES TO DO A REPORT OF A POSSIBLE SITUATION

WE COULD NOT Inform the Mother that the father was seeking custody of the child Because they both are our clients (unknowingly) and there are strong confidentiality laws in place for all clients.

Practice Behaviors Cont. Gen 5.3 Engage in practices that advance social and economic justice Friend to friend partners with all agencies that work to keep women, children and all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault safe.
