1. The metric system goes by powers of: A) 100 B) 10 C) 1000 D) 10,000 200mg = _____________g 2g 20g .2g 20000g

Identify the property that is being measured with this graduated cylinder, and identify the measurement with the correct unit of measure. a. mass, 32 mL b. volume, 31 mL c. volume, 36 mL d. volume, 48 mL

4. A student wants to test how the concentration of phosphorus in a fertilizer affects plant growth. In designing this experiment the manipulated variable would most likely be the...? a. height each plant grows after given fertilizer. b. type of phosphorus used. c. type of each plant used. d. amount of phosphorus used per plant.

Shawn is planning a scientific experiment Shawn is planning a scientific experiment. He wants to learn whether the time of day has an affect on how far the rose petals in his mother’s rose garden open. He plans to measure the diameter of each flower every hour during a sunny day in the spring. What is the independent variable in Shawn’s experiment? a. the time of day b. the number of flowers c. the diameter of the flowers d. the time of year

The timed performance of the three athletic events was the...? 6. In testing the effectiveness of an energy drink on the performance of athletes, 50 athletes were given water and 50 athletes were given a new energy drink called “Power Up.” After drinking one can of “Power Up”, each athlete was timed while performing a 30 meter sprint, 50-sit-ups, and 20 pull-ups. The timed performance of the three athletic events was the...? a. conclusion of this experiment b. hypothesis for this scenario c. responding variable (dependent variable) d. manipulated variable (independent variable)

7. Nick and Doug designed an experiment to find out if goldfish grow larger if fewer fish live in the same bowl. They measured the lengths of seven goldfish and placed them in identical bowls. Two goldfish were placed in one bowl, and the remaining five goldfish were placed in a second bowl (see below). . For three months they poured the same amount of food into each bowl each day, and they maintained the water conditions the same. Then they measured the lengths of all the fish and compared them. What is the responding variable (dependent variable) in this investigation? a. length of the fish b. number of fish per bowl c. amount of food per fish d. condition of the water

I Can… Interpret data from a table Interpret data from a circle graph Interpret data from a line graph Interpret data from a bar graph TOC #7 Interpret data

Copy this down! Data Interpretation in 4 Steps Detailed Version Step 1: Carefully examine the table, graph, or diagram. Step 2: Look for patterns/trends in the way the data is organized and displayed. Step 3: Read the question. Determine specifically what it is asking. Also read the answer choices. Step 4: Again examine the visual to find the answer. Note: often the answer will not be obvious, but it can be determined by analyzing patterns/trends of the displayed data.

What do you notice when you examine this table? Task: Write down three facts about this table. (1) Closely examine the table, graph, or diagram. City X Avg Temp City Y Avg Temp 12 months Avg monthly temp (in Celsius)

What patterns do you see with this data? Task: Write down one pattern that you see. (2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. January February City X-Lowest temps (coldest) are Dec, Jan and Feb City Y-Lowest temps (coldest) are also Dec, Jan and Feb December

What other patterns do you see with this data? (2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. What other patterns do you see with this data? June, July, and Aug are the highest temps (hottest) for both cities June July August

What other patterns do you see with this data? (2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. What other patterns do you see with this data? For both cities the lowest temps happen in the coldest winter months. For both cities the highest temps happen in the summer months. Also for both cities moderate temps occur in spring and fall. January February Spring Both of these cities have four seasons. This reveals to you something about their locations. (Not all places on Earth have four seasons!) June July August Fall December

Is there anything else that you notice about this data? (2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. Hint: Look at the temps of these two cities. Which city is warmer? City X is cooler City Y is warmer Since city Y is generally warmer than city X, this reveals to you something about the location of each city. (They are not located in the same area!)

(3) Read the question and determine specifically what it is asking. Also carefully read the answer choices. We know that city X is cooler than city Y. Which one of these answer choices best explains this?

(4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). …nothing here about wind speed, & this would not make X cooler than Y. So letter A probably is not the right answer. City X is cooler City Y is warmer

(4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). …nothing here about humidity, & this would not make X cooler than Y. So letter B probably is not the right answer. City X is cooler City Y is warmer

(4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). …nothing here about rainfall, & this would not make X cooler than Y. So letter D probably is not the right answer. City X is cooler City Y is warmer

So letter C is the correct answer. (4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Cities on the equator are closer to the sun, so these cities are generally hotter than cities in other areas of our planet. So letter C is the correct answer. City X is generally colder than City Y, so it is logical to assume that City X is further from the equator. City X could be Chicago, IL while city Y could be Orlando, FL. City X is cooler City Y is warmer

(may be in the pattern/trend). Step 1: Carefully examine it. Step 2: Look for patterns/trends. Step 3: Determine what the question is asking, & read the choices. Step 4: Find the answer SPI 0807.Inq.3: Interpret Data Questions Science (may be in the pattern/trend).
