IS4445 Today’s session Subjects covered and the types of questions to expect Modelling questions Essay style questions General stuff Questions?

Making new connections Types of learning application Doing things Reflection Examples Understanding things Making new connections

Exam structure Three questions, answer two 90 minutes You must answer Question 1 You may choose to answer either Question 2 or Question 3 All questions carry equal marks Dictionaries may be used for international students, however you will need to coordinate with the International Office in advance Students registered with DSS may be allocated additional time or alternative resources, however you will need to coordinate with the DSS Office in advance

Question 1 – doing things Presented with a scenario Asked to apply some of the interaction design methods we have discussed This can include any one of the following Personas, empathy maps, journey maps, value curves, mind maps, thinking hats, use cases/storyboarding, sketching/Wireframing, formative testing, summative testing Will be broken down into parts (a), (b), and (c) May ask you to apply different methods in each part May ask you to apply same methods for different users

Question 2 – understanding things Asked to discuss concepts or challenges and how specific methods help to address them Note – this is broken down into parts (a), (b), and maybe (c) Asked to relate these concepts or challenges to real-world examples An example (not on the exam) Critically discuss each of the following, using examples from specific businesses or your own experiences to illustrate your answer (a) the need for user participation and the role of formative testing (20 marks) (b) …

Question 3 – making connections Presented with a statement or idea and asked for your opinion E.g. Paul Rand claimed “The public is more familiar with bad design than good design”. Critically discuss this statement in the context of interaction design, using examples from specific businesses or your own experiences to illustrate your answer Just one part (no breakdown into (a), (b), etc.) You have to decide how to apply what you have learned to form a meaningful answer

Answering Questions Exam technique Manage your time Plan your answers Say it simply but use the keywords from the semester, e.g. if you are talking about ‘personas’, call them personas, if you are talking about ‘journeys’, call them journeys Sketch out your diagrams very quickly as roughwork if you’re not sure how to make them fit together Answer your best questions first Use examples Have these lined up as part of your revision

Sample* rubric Criteria Qualities Proportion of marks Question 1 Accuracy 40 (application focused) Completeness Idenitification of ambiguity 20 Question 2 (understanding focused) Use of examples Links to other material Further learning Question 3 Is it true? 30 (extrapolation focused) Is it new? 25 Is it interesting?
