Were do 6 Million People Live Growing Global Population Population Density Nutritional Density

7 Billion and Counting UN projected the world population will reach 9 billion by 2054 Global pessimists argue that the population will soon outstrip food supply leading to famine, disease, and social disorder Global warming will lead to increased natural disasters which will impact developing countries at a higher rate

Where do we live Population distribution refers to the way people are spread out over the earth surface Global population is unevenly distributed The majority lives north of the equator in mid-latitudes with most living close to the oceans

Population Density Measures the number of people in a given area- called a crude density Calculated by dividing the population of a country by its area Population = Population Density Area in KM2 These figures are useful for general comparisons

Population Density Problems These figures do not take into account the wide variations that exist within larger countries Rural and urban densities differ dramatically Space vs. population Canada- population density of 3.5 persons per square km is one of the lowest in the world. Yet with 80% urban population, most Canadians live at far higher densities than those indicated for Canada by calculating the small population against its large size

Nutritional Density The measure of how mush nutrition and calories can be produced from a certain area An area with fertile soil and adequate temperatures and precipitation will have a higher nutritional value density than areas such as Canada’s North Fraser Valley has exceptionally rich soils but short growing season Southern China has rich soils and a climate to produce 3 sets of crops a year- why lost of produce is from China
