Today’s Schedule 1. Do-Now Cornell notes Dry erase practice Compare and Contrast Elements Element Bingo Conclusion Questions Objectives: Today we will… 8.5 (A) describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations, of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in the electron cloud 8.5(B) identify that protons determine an element's identity and valence electrons determine its chemical properties, including reactivity Dark Matter

Essential Question: What determines the reactivity of an element? Questions Notes The number of electrons in the outside orbital are Valence electrons. These determine how reactive an element is. (reactive-reacts a lot with other elements). -Elements in group 1 are VERY REACTIVE because they easily lose 1 valence electron. -Elements in group 18 don’t react, because their outer orbital is full of electrons. They are called Noble Gases. The atom to the right has ___ valence electrons, because…

Valence Electrons-Filled, not reactive. Noble Gases 1 valence electron=VERY REACTIVE 4. Periods 5. 7. 2. 3. Label the periodic table with groups and periods 6. Groups

Atomic Structure How many valance electrons does this element have?

Atomic Structure Which group? Which period? 1 H 1.008 Hydrogen

Atomic Structure Which group? Which period? 8 O 15.999 Oxygen

Atomic Structure Which group? Which period? 11 Na 22.999 Sodium

Atomic Structure How many valence electrons?

Atomic Structure How many valence electrons?

Atomic Structure Which element is in period 4 and has 1 valence electron?

Atomic Structure What determines how reactive an element is?

Atomic Structure What do we call the elements in Group 18?

Atomic Structure Why are the elements in group 18 nonreactive?

Atomic Structure Why are the elements in group 1 so reactive?

Atomic Structure Which element is in period 2 and has 2 valence electrons?

Atomic Structure Which element is in period 3 and group 17?

Atomic Structure Which element is in group 2 and has 7 valence electrons?

Atomic Structure Which is more reactive: lithium or neon?

Atomic Structure Which is more reactive: argon or potassium?

Atomic Structure Which is element is more reactive than aluminum but less reactive than sodium?

Chemistry Video Brainpop – Atomic Model Ions- This is why chemical reactions happen. YouTube- Valence Electrons. They don’t have to know about electron configuration, but it will let them know where they are headed with this in high school. Watch the Brainpop videos if you have time at the end.

Compare and Contrast Elements Work with your shoulder partner to complete the following: Sodium Aluminum Atomic # group # energy levels Proton # # valence electrons period Electron # reactivity Neutron # metal, nonmetal, or metalloid Atomis mass

Compare and Contrast Elements Sodium Atomic number =11 11 protons 11 electrons 12 neutrons Atomic mass=22.99 amu 1st group 1 valence electron Very reactive metal in 3rd period. Aluminum Atomic number =13 13 protons 13 electrons 14 neutrons Atomic mass = 26.982 amu 13th group 3 valence electrons Least reactive metal in 3rd period. Metals 3rd period 3 energy levels Atomic # group # energy levels Proton # # valence electrons period Electron # reactivity Neutron # metal, nonmetal, or metalloid Atomis mass

Element Bingo Fill in your Bingo card with element names from the left. In a random order.

Element Bingo Students will work in groups of 4. The group will decide who will be in charge of the bingo call list. They will keep track of which cards are called. Stack the Bingo cards face down in the center of the table. 4. The person at the red seat will begin by reading the top Bingo card to the group. 5. The group will use their Periodic Table to answer the question. 6. Each student will mark their answer on their Bingo card. 7. The first person in the group to get 4 in a row wins.

Element Bingo Questions after Element Bingo Answer these in your notebook using complete, reflective sentences. How are groups and periods helpful in locating an element on the Periodic Table? What information is needed to identify an element? How does the reactivity of a metal differ from nonmetals? Where are the most reactive metals located on the Periodic table? What determines the reactivity of a metal? Where on the Periodic Table are the most reactive nonmetals located? Groups are vertical columns and periods are horizontal rows. The two pieces are used to locate an element, similar to the x and y axis coordinates on a graph. The atomic number or the number of protons can be used to identify an element. Metals with the fewest number of valence electrons are the most reactive. Nonmetals with seven valence electrons are the most reactive, however, even though hydrogen has just one valence electron, it is highly reactive. It is the only exception in the nonmetal group. On the far left side. Valence electrons determine reactivity. The metals with the fewer valence electrons are more reactive. The metals in group 1 are the most reactive metals. The nonmetals located in group 17 are the most reactive nonmetals. Hydrogen, which has only one valence electron is also very reactive.
