3. Geographic and Historical Notes Huntington County is located in North Central Indiana. It is bordered by the following counties: Wells to the east and southeast, Grant to the south, Wabash to the west, Whitley to the north, and Allen to the northeast. U.S. Highway 24 and State Highway 9 and Interstate Highway 69 cross the county. Elevation is 750-850 feet. Most of the terrain is slightly sloping, except for some areas where it is nearly level. The landscape features oak and hickory trees. The landscape features oak and hickory trees. The county pertains to the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain land resource area. Huntington county is in the Eastern Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 18٥/34٥ in January and 62٥/85٥ in July. Annual precipitation is about 37 and snowfall about 32 inches. Dividing the county in half, typically the first freeze of the season occurs October 5-10 in the east and October 10-15 in the west.. The last freeze varies from May 1-5 in the southwestern half and from May 5-10 in the northeastern half. The growing season lasts about 153-168 days. Agricultural activity is diversified with corn for grain, soybeans, and livestock. About four-fifths of the land is farmland and about four-fifths of that land is in cash crops. Additional crops are hay and winter wheat. Popcorn is a special crop. Livestock includes cattle/calves, milk cows, hogs/pigs, and sheep/lambs. Main natural resources include clay, construction sand and gravel, petroleum, crushed stone, and forestland. Water resources include the Summit Lake Reservoir and Big Blue Reservoirs Nos. 7A, 13, 14, and 15; and Giboney Lake and Lake Haven; and the Wabash, Little and Salamonie Rivers. Communities include the city of Huntington (the county seat) and the towns of Andrews, Markle (which extends into Wells County), Mount Etna, Roanoke, and Warren.
