Why should I mark a text when I read? What is “marking the text”? Numbering, writing, and drawing on a printed piece of writing in an organized way Why should I mark a text when I read? To pick out the most important information To help summarize To connect sections of the text To break down the text into smaller pieces

Step One Number the paragraphs Do this before you read Write the number small enough so you have room to write in the margin Check your numbers

Step Two Read the text Pencils down! You will re-read the text as you go through all the other steps

Step Three Circle important words Circle key terms and other essential words or numbers To identify key terms, think about if the word or phrase is Repeated Defined by the author Used to explain or represent an idea Used in an original or unique way

Step Four Underline important information Underline statements that show the author’s main points or big ideas Some main points may be directly stated, and some may be implied An author may make several main points throughout the text If you find information (data, facts, etc.) that seems to be support or evidence, you should be able to find a main point nearby

Step Five Write in the margins Three quick strategies: Summarize look at sections and briefly state what they are about Question write questions that might help lead you to understand what the author is saying or doing Connect write about how sections relate to you, to other parts of the text, and to the world
