1947-1964 Jawaharlal Nehru becomes prime minister. Considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation-state: a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. 1984-1989 Rajiv Gandhi served as prime minister after the 1984 assassination of his mother. His period in office was mired in controversies; several scandals damaged his corruption-free image. 1921 Mahatma Gandhi assumes leadership in the Indian National Congress and conducts social campaigns for independence against British rule. India achieves independence from Britain; India and Pakistan are partitioned; modern Indian state is founded; parliamentary democracy is instated. 1947 1966-1984 Indira Gandhi is prime minister (except for a brief period from 1977 to 1980). The first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India. Gandhi was known for her political intransigence and centralisation of power.
