Mass Vaccination Clinics Henderson County, NC Linda Weldon, RN, BSN Linda Charping, MEd, RHEd Henderson County Department of Public Health

Learning Objectives: Understand logistical need of an off- site vaccination clinic Describe the advantages / disadvantages of working with a contracted vaccine distributor Identify marketing techniques used to reach adults and children

Planning for a fall influenza clinic begins Late winter of calendar year

Target group(s) to vaccinate Anticipated response - quantity of vaccine to order FIRST DECISIONS:

Can we get vaccine in time? CDC recommendations for vaccination for the upcoming season Competition from commercial sites Now the real work begins! When ?

Where? Site available on clinic date? Large enough to handle all activities? Adequate parking? Restroom facilities?

Equipment needed: 1.Refrigeration to maintain cold chain 2.Copiers for insurance information 3.Medical supplies

Staffing for flu clinics: Licensed nurses Paid staff Student nurses Administrative support 3 admin to 1 nurse

VaxCare We were in the early planning stages when VaxCare came to our attention!

Advantages of using a contract supplier: No upfront cost for vaccine Guaranteed delivery date Variable quantity – reorder as needed No greater administrative burden at clinic site

Advantages… More insurance companies in network VaxCare will do all billing! HD will receive % for each vaccine paid by insurance

Advantages…. Vaccine supplied in prefilled syringes – preservative free VaxCare provided medical supplies

Disadvantages: One of largest insurance carriers for our retired population was not in VaxCares network Cash table was more complicated due to VaxCares receipt forms

Disadvantages… PR value of non-network employer insurance companies HD set up special clinics for some employers

Disadvantages…. Extra planning time for incorporating VaxCare procedures into our tried and true protocols! meetings

VaxCare Marketing Objective : increase immunization rates and attract new patients Website: Telephone campaign Year 1 – by zip code – no charge Year 2+ - Database built using client information from flu consent form
