Shifting Perspectives on Ecosystems SCI 10 – Sustainability Day 16

Review: Threats to Sustainability Increased pollutants (i.e. fertilizers, CO2), pesticide use Eutrophication Biomagnification Destruction of habitat Deforestation: clear cutting without replanting. Affects carbon levels, weather, birds, habitats … Draining wetlands for land, mosquito control, water use. Affects water filtration, habitat and fisheries… Alien species/ invasive species Can outcompete native organisms Overexploitation (i.e. cod)

Ecotourism and Connectivity Ecotourism is a nature-based, sustainable form of tourism that is now a multibillion-dollar industry worldwide. Connectivity is the collection of links and relationships between ecosystems that are separated geographically. (migration)

Paradigm Paradigm – A view of the world or a way of thinking about how the world works. A shift is a significant (big) change.

Paradigm Shifts Paradigm Shifts: rare and significant changes in the way humans view the world. Major changes which are controversial when first proposed but eventually come to be accepted as a major advancement in scientific knowledge and understanding (ex. The world is flat)

Takes a While… Paradigm shift a significant change in the way humans view the world

The Lorax

Are We in the Middle of a Shift? Proof: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Public Transportation Alternative sources of energy Reducing invasive species Education citizens about environmental issuses Government, Fed/Prov/Minicipal, regulations/laws/acts

Outcomes of the Shift Pesticides and By-Laws – stops the use of cosmetics pesticides (like DDTs) that can bioaccumulate. The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement – as a result of the ELA a phosphorus control program. Environmental Farm Plans – impact of farms, nutrient/soil/irrigation/wildlife/pesticide management

Outcomes of the Shift Highway and outdoor lights changed/ being changed to lower energy bulbs Idle Free Zones BPA (Bisphenol A) ban
