19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, having been built - epoikodomeō - signifies "to build upon" (epi, "upon"), 1 Cor. 3:10 -11; Jude 1:20; What does this refer to? – see verse 19 Paul now advances the thought of being part of God’s household to our position as the house itself. McCalley on the foundation of the apostles and prophets foundation - themelios - placed or laid as a foundation, fundamental; Metaphorically used of elementary doctrine and instruction,
20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, of the apostles and prophets (better: laid by the) apostles - apostolos - "one sent forth" (apo, "from," stellō, "to send"). Used of the twelve disciples and in Acts 14:4, 14, it is used of Barnabas as well as of Paul; prophets - prophētēs - "a proclaimer of a divine message," Hence, in general, "the prophet" was one upon whom the Spirit of God rested – see Acts 15:32 – New Testament prophets Eph 3:5b as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit; also see Eph 4:11-12 These men constituted the foundation of the church since it was through them that God revealed and established the church. “In practical terms this means that the church is built on the New Testament Scriptures.” Constable
Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone What does “Himself” imply? 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone What does “Himself” imply? used as an intensive for emphasis - it sets the individual apart from everything else Zodhiates being - eimi - lit: to be - the state in which someone or something continuously exits corner stone - akrogōniaios - denotes "a chief corner-stone" (from akros, "highest, extreme," gōnia, "a corner, angle") in this clause “corner stone” is a noun which identifies the subject Christ Jesus Himself (completes the subject) see Luke 20:17, 1 Pet. 2:6, Isa. 28:16
The main part of this verse (subject & verb): 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, The main part of this verse (subject & verb): the whole building is growing (or “grows”) Who is “the whole building”? 1 Cor 3:9b you are God's field, God's building also see 2 Cor 5:1 grows - auxanō - "to grow or increase," of the growth of that which lives, naturally or spiritually (present tense – continuous action) see Col 2:19
the rest of the verse tells us how this growth works 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, the rest of the verse tells us how this growth works 1st – “in whom” – which points back to Christ Jesus the corner stone (i.e. in Him) 2nd - being fitted together - synarmologeō - "to fit or frame together" (syn, "with," harmos, "a joint, in building," and legō, "to choose"), 21 In Him the whole structure is joined (bound, welded) together harmoniously, Amplified Bible The phrase being fitted together precisely defines the function of the cornerstone. Perhaps to say the building was “aligned” on Him gets at the sense best. McCalley
3rd - into a holy temple in the Lord 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 3rd - into a holy temple in the Lord temple - naos - "a shrine or sanctuary;" metaphorically, of the Church, the mystical Body of Christ 1 Cor 3:16a Do you not know that you are a temple of God note: contrast “the whole building” vs you (a believer) in the Lord – this building is not physical but spiritual similar verse about “the whole body”: Eph 4:16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

Eph 4:11-16 will tell us how this building is to take place; McCalley
