Oil Industry YOU NEED YOUR BINDER WRITE DOWN THE LEARNING TARGET AND SUCCESS CRITERIA ON THE SHEET OF PAPER WHERE YOUR WARM-UP will be! Learning Target: Today we are going to explain the important discovery of Spindletop by taking notes, discussions, and activities Success Criteria: I will be expected to complete a timeline of the oil industry from the 1900s to the complex industry we have today.

As you watch the video think about this… Warm Up- Engage As you watch the video think about this… Why do they call black oil gold? What did you learn about the value of oil? What choice would you have made in this situation?

Spindletop Hill in Beaumont was located on a Salt Dome Pattillo Higgins and Anthony Lucas struck oil on Spindletop Hill on January 10, 1901 500,000 barrels of oil spewed for six days before the well was capped. Read about the pipeline current even 10 mins

Background of Industrialization Watch the clip about Spindletop and explain the importance of finding “Black Gold” Start at 4:20

Economic Development Pipelines and tankers built to carry oil Storage Facilities built to store oil Lumber used to build oil derricks Quick notes on industrialization and how it impacted TX/US

Oil Is Booming! You will get into groups of 4-5 It is the year 1915, and your group is responsible for creating a new oil boom town in Texas. You will need to create a rough draft before receiving the white paper for final draft.

Oil Is Booming! YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Location-geography is important, make sure you have room to expand, good water supply, etc. You will draw your city outline on the computer paper, including locations for housing, water sources, etc. Workers need services- label schools, stores, doctors, etc

Oil Industry YOU NEED YOUR BINDER WRITE DOWN THE LEARNING TARGET AND SUCCESS CRITERIA ON THE SHEET OF PAPER WHERE YOUR WARM-UP will be! Learning Target: Today we are going to explain the important discovery of Spindletop by taking notes, discussions, and activities Success Criteria: I will create a Boomtown during the Oil Boom. I will explain how the Boomtown works with my group.

Warm Up 1/9/17 In your binder choose the best answer choice and explain why you picked the answer in a complete sentence. How did rising demand for oil affect the Texas economy? A It delayed production efforts in all other industries and strangled the white-collar economy. B It allowed industrialists the freedom to do research and develop new environmental technologies. C It increased the population and the demand for lumber, housing, and agricultural products. D It limited population growth and agricultural production in favor of industrial growth. 10 minutes for time Engage

Make sure to explain the location, different services, water supplies etc. You will also need to explain how the boomtowns impacted TX during the Oil Boom.

Boom and Bust Cycles

In your binder write down the target and criteria for 1/10/17 Learning Target: Today we will be comparing and contrasting the different types of boom and busts cycles Success Criteria: I will be able to describe each piece to the boom and bust cycle.

Warm Up 1/10/17 Pick up an article off the stool Read the article silently Take down 4 facts you grabbed from the article Think about how it relates to Magnolia, Texas. 10 minutes for time Engage

Small Group Talk Think: (30 Seconds Silently): With the current construction in and around Magnolia, and the growth of new businesses, is the area a booming or in a bust? Write: (30 Seconds): Write in complete sentences why you believe the area is in a boom or bust I think Magnolia is ____ because ____. Pair: Partner A to Partner B (30 Seconds) Partner B to Partner A (30 Seconds) Share: Be prepared to share aloud with the class and defend your answer.

Real Estate Industry During the late 1970s unemployment was low, real estate was in demand and building expanded Unemployment increased during the early 1980s due to the energy crisis and banking scandals, the demand for real estate decreased. By the early 1990s the economy improved and so did real estate demand

Banking Industry The stock market crash caused the prices of stocks to fall and many people were left with high debts. Banks ran out of money because they could not collect the money owed to them. Governments did not insure banks and Texans lost all their money. Texans did not have money to spend Factories and businesses were lost and farms were lost. By the 2000s, loans were taken out by people buying homes, commercial properties, automobiles, etc. When the economy began to slow people lost jobs and could not pay the loans back.

Boom and Bust Cycle

Small Group Talk Think: (30 Seconds Silently): What are some characteristics of an area that is in a boom? What about a bust? Write: (30 Seconds): List the characteristics of a boom town and a bust town Pair: Share your list with your partner, add anything to your lists that you didn’t have. Share: Be prepared to share aloud with the class and defend your answer.

Business Cycle Flow Chart Study the flow chart and label the following in the correct locations: Expansion Peak Contraction Trough Recession Depression

Expansion During a period of expansion: Wages increase Low unemployment People are optimistic and spend money High demand for goods Businesses start-up Easy to get loans from the bank Businesses make profit

Peak When the economic cycle peaks: The economy STOPS growing (It’s reached the top) Businesses can’t produce any more or hire any new people Cycle begins to contract

Contraction During a period of contraction: Business cut back production and begin laying people off Unemployment rises Number of jobs declines People are pessimistic (negative) and stop spending money Banks stop lending money

Trough When the economic cycle reaches a trough: Economy “bottoms-out” (lowest possible point) High unemployment and low spending Stock prices drop When we hit rock bottom, where’s the only place we can go?

Recession vs Depression A prolonged contraction is called a recession (contraction for over 6 months) A recession of more than 1 year is called a depression

Business Cycle Flow Chart Now knowing what you know are there any changes you need to make to your flow chart: Expansion Peak Contraction Trough Recession Depression

Exit Ticket Answer the questions on the worksheet and turn into the tray. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON IT!
