A Peek at What We Are Learning This Week 2nd Grade News Week of October 22, 2018 A Peek at What We Are Learning This Week Reading & Writing- “Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday” is our new anchor text. Some of the skills the students will touch on include character analysis, story sequence and structure. The writing task for this text will be a narrative with a focus on dialogue. You can help your 2nd grader by asking questions about the story events in the stories they read aloud to you. For example, “What happened in the beginning of the story?” or “What happened in the middle of the story?” Language, Phonics & Spelling- The students will work with words that use the h brother digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh, and tch). Possessive nouns and using apostrophes is the language skill focus of the week. Math- This week the focus in math will be on modeling numbers within 1,000 with place value blocks and place value disks. The next few lessons will begin to have the students exchange ones for a ten and tens for a hundred. This will help them make a connection and prepare them for regrouping in addition in the upcoming lessons. Ask your 2nd grader daily to show you or teach you something from their math lesson that day. This will help them in explaining their thinking. Social Studies- We will begin our unit on Community and Its Geography. The students will focus on a variety of map skills and learn about the different landforms that shape our world.
