Estimated Future Traffic Volumes Why Improvements? 13 (28) 9 (33) 17 (62) 7 (40) 4 (19) 6 (3) 364 (284) 60 (10) 23 (32) 4 (32) 130 (359) 14 (45) A recently completed traffic study found that existing delays on westbound Hawthorne are high during peak periods. Development / redevelopment in the area will soon make those delays much worse. The City thought it would be prudent to proactively make improvements before operations and safety become a significant problem. Hawthorne Blvd. Estimated Future Traffic Volumes 53 (140) 9 (33) 97 (156) 7 (40) 4 (19) 6 (3) 428 (314) 60 (10) 63 (94) 4 (32) 179 (412) 60 (211) Hawthorne Blvd.
Signal vs. Roundabout Roundabouts offer better operations since drivers only yield and are not required to stop. Signals require drivers to stop all the time, which increases delays and emissions. Roundabouts have been shown to reduce severe/fatal crashes dramatically compared to signals – drivers are forced to slow down through the intersection and less fixed objects to run into. Roundabout is primarily a one time investment, traffic signals have ongoing operating costs
