Combining Like Terms TeacherTwins©2014

Warm Up Write each expression or equation. 1). The sum of three times a number and 6 equals 57. 2). The quotient of 76 and a number is 152. 3). The product of 2 and a number equals -18. 4). The difference between 4 times a number and 12 is 45 3x + 6 = 57   2n = -18 4n – 12 = 45

Like Terms

Unlike Terms Terms that do not have the same variables.   You cannot add these terms because they are not like terms.

Combining Like Terms in Expressions     In this expression there are only 2 like terms. We can combine 4x and -6x. We cannot add anything to 7y or 7.

  Combine like terms

12   3x + 4y + 1   12h + 2r - 10
