LESSON 2: How iShare 1. His former life (before he met Christ) In Acts 22 and 26 the Apostle Paul tells his redemption story. Both times his “testimony” was divided into 3 separate categories: 1. His former life (before he met Christ) 2. How he met Christ 3. How his life changed (after he met Christ)

Paul’s Story Paul’s story in Acts 22: His Former Life – vs. 1-5 How He Met Christ – vs. 6-10 How His Life Has Changed – vs. 13-16

Paul’s Story Paul’s story in Acts 26: His Former Life – vs. 1-11 How He Met Christ – vs. 12-18 How His Life Has Changed – vs. 19-23 And that is our pattern as well

Sharing Your Story Involves: My Life Before I met Christ How I Met Christ My life now

1. My Life Before I Met Christ: Before meeting Christ I…….. Felt guilty and ashamed Had no purpose or direction Lived a meaningless life Felt disconnected from God Tried to earn God’s favor & love Felt empty inside People of any age relate to these feelings Here are some common phrases I have seen on people’s “before” list. This list describes how sin left us feeling, or as the Bible calls it the “wages of sin.” The idea is to make a connection with lost people by letting them know that you have experienced the same sense of disconnect with God that they are now experiencing. People of any age can relate to that. Were you saved at a young age like me? Do you think you have no “before” section to your testimony? The truth is that even at a young age we begin to feel the negative effects of our sin. When we share with unbelievers how sin left us feeling-they can relate to that emptiness.

Since I was saved at a young age, my “Before” section sounds like this: Even though I had always attended church and tried to be a good person, there came a point in my life when I had to admit that something was missing. I had no peace in my life. I felt totally disconnected from God-like my prayers weren’t getting any higher than my head. I felt guilty all the time and began wondering what would happen to me if I died that way.

2. How I Met Christ One day I discovered that: My problem was that I am a sinner – in fact everybody is (Rom. 3:23) Sin separates us from God now – and forever (Isa. 59:2, Rom.6:23a) We can’t fix the sin problem by trying to be good (Isa. 64:6, Titus 3:5, Eph. 2:8-9) At this point we want to make sure they have a complete Gospel presentation – you may choose to use different verses. But make sure they understand the basic Gospel message.

2. How I Met Christ 4. Jesus died & arose to solve our sin problem (Rom. 5:6-8, Col. 2:14) 5. God wants us to TURN from our sin [repent] (Acts 2:38, 2 Cor. 7:10) 6. And TRUST Christ alone to forgive and save us from our sins forever (John 3:16, Rom. 10:9-11)

For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved - Rom. 10:13

…SO I PRAYED SOMETHING LIKE THIS Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for that. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sin and then arose. Please forgive me for all of my sins and help me turn from them. I now confess you as my Lord and Savior and trust you alone for my salvation. Thank you for the free gift of eternal life. Amen If we fail to share the Gospel, we have just told them an interesting story – that’s all. The power is in the gospel!

3. My Life Now: I am NOT perfect, but I have Peace,…. …because I am Forgiven. My life has Purpose and Meaning. I’m part of God’s forever-Family. I can pray to God & He Hears me! I Live my life “On Mission.” Close with an illustration of God’s Grace The above phrases showed up time and time again in people’s testimonies. While your words may be different, I think you will agree that your life with Christ is much better than before! We acknowledge that our life isn’t perfect and that we still have problems. But the difference is that now Christ walks with us through our difficulties. That’s why I close with an illustration of God’s Grace during a difficult time in my life.

Since that day, my life has not been perfect Since that day, my life has not been perfect. I have failed God many times. But I know that I am God’s child and that he put me here for a reason. I now go to church to worship and to fellowship and to grow in my relationship with Christ. I no longer go to try to “score points” with God or just to appease my conscience. During the greatest trial of my life, Christ was with me and gave me peace. One afternoon my father’s Harley was struck head-on by a passing car almost right in front of my house. Even though he was killed instantly, I had a peace that passes all understanding. Because both he and I have trusted Christ to forgive and save us, I knew we would be together again someday.

The Final Step Give them an opportunity to respond. Repeat the “sinner’s prayer” to them and ask: “Is that what you’d like to say to God? Would you like to call upon God right now and receive His forgiveness and His gift of eternal life?”

Some final thoughts… 1. Protect the integrity of the Gospel. Guard against “easy believe-ism”. Make sure the person you are sharing with has a basic understanding of repentance and faith – and that their decision to follow Christ will fundamentally change their lives.
