Numex Experiment 482 for COSMO-D2 (new physics) COSMO Version 5.04e 10.04.2019 SMC Meeting January 2018, Offenbach
SMC Meeting January 2018, Offenbach Conclusion The NUMEX experiment for COSMO-D2 with full data assimiliation cycle performs worse than the hindcasts. Problem in all tests: drying out of the soil (while different hindcast configurations / external parameters lead to different soil moistures). Problem in NUMEX: some members of the EPS system crashed because of numerical instabilities. The few that we investigated could be cured using the former vertical diffusion in the dynamics (itype_vdif=-1). DWD decided that there is not enough time to test the new COSMO-ICON physics before introducing COSMO-D2 in May 2018, therefore we stay with the "old physics behaviour" (for the remaining lifetime of the COSMO-Model) we use the new blocked code but configuration as with the old COSMO ijk-physics (including some hard-coded switches for turbulence: these are activated with loldtur=.TRUE. now) 10.04.2019 SMC Meeting January 2018, Offenbach
SMC Meeting January 2018, Offenbach In the Meantime Drying out of the soil can also be seen in ICON, if soil moisture analysis is switched off. Investigations lead to problems in TERRA regarding runoff and infiltration. Modifying the way these processes are treated lead to a more wet soil (implemented in 5.04g). Nevertheless: DWD will not investigate the modified TERRA version in combination with the new COSMO-ICON physics. Now we are testing the old ijk-physics. 10.04.2019 SMC Meeting January 2018, Offenbach

SMC Meeting January 2018, Offenbach How to Proceed? Implement subversions (5.05a, 5.05b, etc.) for testing. What is included, depends on what is ready. Checklist: Are the results bit identical? If not, do we have test / verification results? Is documentation available, where necessary? For which date shall we aim with Version 5.06? 10.04.2019 SMC Meeting January 2018, Offenbach
