Transferable skills used Outdoors Skills for Learning, life and work in Castlemilk Day Nursery Transferable skills used Outdoors

Our example is outdoor learning Children at Castlemilk Day Nursery have opportunity to develop transferable skills across all curriculum areas. These skills can be developed by all children where ever they are learning. Our example is outdoor learning The skills children learn and develop provide them with a good knowledge and starting point for further scaffolding their development as lifelong learners in their adult, social and working lives. All children should have exposure and access to learn new skills to enable them to reach their full potential.

Responsibility/Thinking Skill: Responsibility/Thinking I can follow rules and explain why they are important. Risk assessing Thinking/Cognitive Skills Remembering Understanding Applying Analysing &Evaluating Literacy

Children used their critical thinking to solve a problem. Children asked to make a swing in the nursery woodland garden? I can choose resources to help me solve a problem. “we all need to help each other pull the rope so it’s tight”. Frankie, aged 4yrs What have we used and why? “We used rope. Anne had to throw it over the tree. We had to pull to make it tight”. Colton, age 4yrs “I can pull the rope. It go up like a draw bridge” Noah age 5yrs Literacy/Numeracy

“I climb and help friends” I can take on a lead role. Skill: Teamwork/Leadership I can work part of a team. “I climb and help friends” Xander, age 4yrs “You walk on the rope” Carys, age 4yrs

Skill: Teamwork/Leadership Children were blindfolded and used the rope for support to navigate their way through the woods. One child would take on the leadership role and guide the other child with directions. Numeracy

Creativity/Self Confidence I can talk about my learning, my strengths and next steps. Skill: Creativity/Self Confidence “Sliding down” Xander, age 4yrs “I learned to build a den with sticks, leaves and tarfallen. I like playing in the mud. I like everything outside” Tommy, age 4yrs Literacy/Numeracy/H&WB

“We used a fire to make chocolate and marshmallows” I am developing an understanding of the benefits of healthy and active living. Skill: Physical wellbeing “We used a fire to make chocolate and marshmallows” Annie, age 5yrs Developing a positive attitude to life, and building relationships.

“You can see your breath in the cold” I can learn in all weather Skill: Resilience “I liked climbing on the trees with Ella. I climbed really high. Then climbed down again” Josh, age 4yrs “You can see your breath in the cold” Priya, age 4yrs Health & Wellbeing

What skills do you think we need to do our job? It was important to support children’s understanding of why the skills they are learning are so important for life of work. At Castlemilk Day Nursery we thought we would start with ourselves and our job role when looking at “working in partnership”. Partners have an important role in helping to develop children’s skills. We asked children: What skills do you think we need to do our job? Then we showed them photographs of skills we have been learning to support our job role.

This is Castlemilk Day Nursery staff In-service training day. I have had the opportunity to find out about jobs in my community (Nursery) and I am beginning to understand the idea of a job, why people work and what they like about their job. This is Castlemilk Day Nursery staff In-service training day. Staff learned skills needed to deliver high quality learning experiences to children outdoors.

“Look at Leigh sliding” Darcy, aged 3yrs “We do that in woods” Tommy aged 4yrs “I cooked with fire, you have to stand back. You can get burnt”. Carys, aged 4yrs The children learned skills that our staff need to do their job role.

I believe I can do any job. I begin to realise that people have different talents which they can use in the world of work. I believe I can do any job.
