Genius HOUR

What is it? The chance for you to learn about a topic in science that is interesting to you!! WHAT???????

What is genius hour? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMFQUtHsWhc

What do I need to do? Learn about any scientific topic that you want to Start with a question? But makes sure that it is relevant to you. Using a variety of resources you are going to learn more about the topic Lastly you will create a product that you can share with your peers and the world (I am making a genius hour product myself!)

What is an acceptable product Anything that shows your learning and you can share Video: commercial, how-to video, demonstration Visual: poster, children’s story book, brochure Demonstrate: perform a skit, demonstrate a skill or activity Product: make a model, computer program, website The most important thing about your product is that you show what you learned, I’m not as concerned about the end product as I am in your learning process………. But you do need something!!

EXPECTATIONS I want to be a part of your learning journey and I will use it as an assessment so….. I am requiring that you keep a log book. Every time you work on genius hour, you will write down what you did and record it in the book. What to include??? Resources- I am requiring that you state where you got your resources from and week to week I would like to see these being recorded Learning- new things you discovered, thoughts about what you are planning on doing for your project, where you’d like to go next A-HA moments Reference, reference, reference If you get an image, some text, or even just an idea please write down where it came from. Even if it is just writing down the website address I would like to at least one reference that is not directly from the internet (ie a book, journal, magazine, interview, etc.)

Timeline Pick a topic- ASAP- this must be approved by Mrs. Lalonde Submit a formal proposal submitted to me after the first or second workperiod Research- a brief update will be submitted to me outlining some resources you have used thus far Rough Draft- A specific outline of what your product will be and include (will vary depending on the product) E.g if doing a poster you could submit a rough copy of that, if doing a video that would not work FINAL PRODUCT- we will have a class or two where we share our final products with our peer Due dates will be given as appropriate

Assessment Still in the works but I WILL have it to you soon. It will include: Your learning journey (backed by evidence) Quality of product Quality of research In addition to me marking it, you will be doing a self reflection and explain to me why you deserve the mark (with evidence)

What are some starter ideas I wonder questions from a grade 6 class (p.s, I copied and pasted these directly, spelling and grammar errors are not mine): how does the circulatory system of a horse work? How did dinosaurs become the animals we know today. How the heart works and why we need a heart. i want to learn more about the old mars rover and how big is it how babies are formed inside their moms stomach. I’m am going to research about how the brain works and how it is made and what it is made of.

how do rovers work and build a model of the rover I’m going to be doing my project on how rockets work and I’m going to build a model of it. How can people see better with glasses than without How make a homemade arcade game with no electricity.:p How are different types of cancer formed or caused and how they can maybe be cured or if there is a cure. Black holes…everything about black holes.i want to try to learn every thing about black holes what causes hiv/aids y it kills you How does brain canter spread? My favorite question is “how does crossbreeding animals work?” I also have “what makes people laugh?”, “what caused the Big Bang Theory?”, “how do elements form?”, and “how does the skeletal system heal broken bones?”.

How Does A Plane Fly my question is : how do trees grow flowers and leaves? What are the migration routes of the great white shark? How long does it take them to go in a whole route? At what season do they reach at each place they stop at? How did the universe start? I am going to bring awareness to littering and polluting. explain more about black holes How does your brain connect with your movements? Bring Awareness:Smoking how to increase reaction times and how to increase eye hand coordination.

i want to know what type of stuff is out in space How does the human color pattern works? what happens when a meteor hits the earth?how loud is the sound when the meteor hits the earth???? Why are people worried about global warming? I want to know if the Evolution theory is actually real? HOW DID DINOSAURS GO EXTINCT how was the universe form Learn all there is to know about dolphinss

how are children born with autisum. how can people get healthier and live longer? WHAT FISH LIVE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN??? HOW DO ALL THE BUTTERFLIES GET THEIR COLOR? My question is…Why do we shrink when we get old??? what causes cancer and why does it happen. What are the deadliest fish in the oceans The questions that i am going to ask is,how was the universe was created and the research i am going to do is how was the sun and the planets in our solar system Mercury,Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune, and Pluto. Why do people get white hairs as they get older and how are they formed.? http://www.geniushour.com/2013/03/31/genius-hour-ideas/

Questions???? Please continue to ask me questions and help guide you

Genius hour Resources/ References I did not invent genius hour and many brilliant teachers have shared their ideas and experiences so other teachers, like me, can experiment and introduce genius hour into their classrooms; below are the sites that I have used as my research into genius hour. I will add more as I find them! I will add these to my blog but for now, if you want more information http://geniushour.wikispaces.com/ http://www.geniushour.com/ https://theglobalgeniushourproject.wikispaces.com/ http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=829279 http://www.gallitzvi.com/home/what-is-genius-hour
