DAY ONE

“Field Study Analysis” p. 131 Independently… Read through the example field study Answer questions #1-6 Pair Share

Field Study In conclusion, are field studies totally new? No! Similar to regular investigation plans but you are finding different places rather than changing (still “manipulated”)

Field Study Draft Your new question: How does the distance from Mercer Middle School affect the number of species of living organisms? Independently… Write or draw your ideas for how to do this field study

Field Study Draft Some questions to guide you… Are you going to walk several miles away from Mercer? Are you going to count EVERY plant and animal? No! You have to set BOUNDARIES

Field Study Draft A tool that will help… How do we make it FAIR? A hula hoop! How do we make it FAIR? Pick spots in a “random” pattern

New Field Study Read the bullets What do we always need to add?

New Field Study I will collect your plans at the end of class We will go outside to collect data tomorrow Turn to your groups and write your plan

DAY TWO

Continue Investigation Plans Finish your plans. Revise any areas that need fixing!

Setting Up the Data Table Instead of using measuring tapes, let’s just count steps away from the building. Let’s all do these measurements: 0 steps 5 steps 10 steps

Top View Of Mercer

Zooming In

Doing the Field Investigation 0 steps 5 steps 10 steps Choose a random transect line Away from other students, within boundaries

Doing the Field Investigation This will be trial 2 0 steps 5 steps 10 steps Choose another random transect line Away from other students, within boundaries

Possible Sample Areas

Rules for Going Outside You will need: Pencil Data Table Binder or something else to write on One hula hoop per group

Rules for Going Outside Stay with your group. Do not talk to other groups. Do not play with the hoops! Stay within our boundaries. Walk quietly in the hallway. Do not interrupt any classes. Listen to all directions outside.

DAY THREE

Field Study Data

Write a Conclusion Independently, write a conclusion using the class data Trade conclusions with your partner You are going to score your partner’s conclusion!

Confirm, Correct, Complete Conclusion: How does the distance from Mercer Middle School affect the number of species of living organisms? M.V. R.V.

Confirm, Correct, Complete In conclusion, the distance from Mercer does affect how many living organisms there are. I know this because with 0 steps away from Mercer, there were only 0.9 species. At 10 steps away there were 4.3 different species on average. In conclusion, the further you are from Mercer, the more different species of living organisms there are. Answer 1.3 different species on average Lowest Highest That means there is an average of 3 more different species 10 steps away from Mercer than if you are 0 steps from Mercer Compare
