What is the cover of a book? *Hard outer covering of a book *Protects the pages *Names title and author of book *Often includes a picture that gives clues to what the book is about

What is the spine of the book? Long, skinny part of the book that holds the pages together Part of the book that shows when the book is on the library shelf Shows title and author

Where is the call number? On book spine Book’s “address,” tells where to find the book on library shelves Library uses white labels with letters or numbers to tell where the book belongs Where is the call number? What is the call number? E 567.3 SEU SIL

What is the title page? At front of book Includes the title, author, and publisher If there is an illustrator, that person’s name is also on the title page

Who is the author? Person who writes the book Author’s name can be found on the cover, title page, and spine

Who is the illustrator? Person who draws the pictures or takes the photographs Name appears on title page and sometimes on cover In some nonfiction books with lots of photos, no illustrator is listed because there were so many different people whose pictures appear in the book.

What is the publisher? Company that puts the book together Take the author’s words and the illustrator’s drawings and print it out on pages, add the cover, and distribute the book to be sold Publisher is listed at the bottom of the title page.

What is the copyright date? Year the book was published Like the book’s “birthday” because it tells when the book was made Can be found on the back of the title page. The copyright symbol is the letter c with a circle around it: ©
