Reading Logs
Your Responsibilities: At least two reading logs a week (one this week, to make sure you have time to acquire your novel) Fill out all parts: Your summary should be AT LEAST five sentences. Include characters setting, and important events that happened. Your response should also be AT LEAST five sentences. Be sure to include vocabulary! Reading logs are due by the last day of class each week. These should be kept in your folder/binder and left in you class bin so I can check them over the weekend. All reading logs (you must have nine, minimum) will be due on October 5th/6th, one week before the end of the quarter, so we have time for presentations.
Presentations After you finish your book, you must complete a creative project that connects to your novel. You can create a powerpoint, a poster, a video, a picture book or a diorama. You could perform a skit, reenact a scene from the story, or give a demonstration. You could write a different ending, or rewrite a scene. You have many choices and a lot of freedom with this project, and if you think of something you would like to do, let me know and we can discuss it! You may work alone, with a partner, or in groups, but each student in pairs or groups must have read the same book.
Presentations Don’t stress too much about the presentation. As promised, if you don’t want to present in front of the class, I won’t force you. You can present just to me, or simply turn in your project, depending on what you decide to do. A project rubric will be provided soon.
Time Management: Pace Yourself! Make sure you give yourself time to finish your book AND complete your project! Time flies, so PLEASE DON’T PROCRASTINATE! You have FIVE WEEKS until the due date. Do a little math to figure out how many pages you will need to read each week in order to finish on time! For example, “Farewell to Manzanar” has 156 pages. If I divide 156 pages by 5, this means I have to read a little over 30 pages a week. If I complete the MINIMUM of two reading logs a week, I need to read at least 15 pages twice a week. You know your limits! If you tire of reading easily, you may need to split your reading sessions accordingly!
Enjoy Yourselves! I gave you LOTS of book choices in the hopes that you would find something that interests you. Try to find the JOY of reading!
