9. A student conducted an experiment to see the effects of air on meat 9. A student conducted an experiment to see the effects of air on meat. She placed meat in jars and observed as maggots grew on the meat. She set up two parts of her experiment and used two of the same jars, two of the same piece of meat, and she covered one and left the other uncovered. While she was planning her experiment she thought it would be interesting to see if sunlight would affect the plans – so she set one jar in the sun and put the other in the shade. What is the primary reason why this experiment is not valid? Bellwork 8-26-15

Objectives I can determine cause and effect relationships. Students will be able to describe the tools, skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed to conduct scientific inquiry. Inq.4 Can I infer cause and effect relationships? Inq.5 Am I able to ensure ther eis no error or bias during scientific investigations? I can determine cause and effect relationships. I can find evidence of bias.

#? Cause/Effect and Bias What do you already remember about cause and effect relationships? Write down some examples of cause and effect scenarios in your scientist notebook. You are outdoors. The sun shines brightly. A cold wind blows from the north. You shiver. Then you zip up your coat. Which pair of words represents a cause-and-effect relationship? A scarf, shiver B wind, shiver C shiver, wind D sun, shiver

You Choose "Where Have All The Elephants Gone" Read Paragraph Titled "The Last In A Long Time"- What evidence of a Cause and Effect relationship do you find in this paragraph? (Underline on page) Read Paragraph Titled "A Terrible Synergy"- What evidence of a future cause and effect relationship do you find in this text? (Underline on page) "Warning: 'Pokemon Go' May Cause Unexpected Injury; Socialization" Read this short Article. What evidence of cause and effect relationships do you see in this text? (Underline on page)

What is being compared in the graph?

What cause and effect relationship can we find in this graph?

Bias Assuming something to be true or false before testing it. Influencing an experiment to get the desired results. Why should bias be avoided in scientific research?

1. In which example is bias most likely to be a factor? A A scientist working for a government agency finds that a new drug is safe and effective. B A scientist working for a chemical company finds that the company’s factory does not pollute a nearby river. C Two groups of students follow the same procedure to test the effect of a fertilizer on plant growth. The two groups get similar results. D Two groups of students follow the same procedure to test the effect of salt on the boiling point of water. The two groups get different results.

Exit Ticket If you had to explain bias to a younger sibling, what would you tell them?
