This month in Gastroenterology Eugene B Chang  Gastroenterology  Volume 125, Issue 5, Pages 1295-1297 (November 2003) DOI: 10.1016/j.gastro.2003.09.002

Figure 1 Reduced migration of CD- and UC-CLPF. The migration was induced with 24-hour conditioned media of control-, CD-, or UC-CLPF. CD-CLPF (gray bars) and UC-CLPF (black bars) showed a reduced migratory response toward conditioned media when compared to control-CLPF (white bars). Gastroenterology 2003 125, 1295-1297DOI: (10.1016/j.gastro.2003.09.002)

Figure 2 Kaplan-Meier survival curve of randomized patients treated with PDT plus stenting (group A, n = 20) and of patients with stenting alone (group B, n = 19). Survival was longer in group A compared with group B (P < 0.0001). + Patients still alive. Gastroenterology 2003 125, 1295-1297DOI: (10.1016/j.gastro.2003.09.002)

Figure 3 (A) RELMβ expression is absent in the distal colon (DC) of germ-free animals, but can be induced by bacterial colonization. (B) High-power magnification of RELMβ expression in the distal colon of a germ-free animal. (C) Cecum of a conventionally housed mouse (arrows indicate RELMβ containing goblet cells on the surface epithelium). (D) Cecum of a germ-free mouse stained for RELMβ. (E) Colon stained for RELMβ (dc, distal colon in the center; pc, proximal colon in the periphery) from a former germ-free mouse conventionalized in a SPF environment for 2 weeks. (F) Cecum of a conventionalized mouse stained for RELMβ. Gastroenterology 2003 125, 1295-1297DOI: (10.1016/j.gastro.2003.09.002)

Figure 4 Transgene expression in N10-congenic B6 (A, C, E) versus N10-congenic 129 genetic backgrounds. Representative whole mount preparations demonstrate a relatively dense distribution of X-gal-positive myenteric neurons (blue dots) in the ileocecal junction (A) and midcolon (C) of a N10-congenic B6 mouse, in contrast to completely markedly reduced ileocecal (B) and completely absent (D) midcolonic X-gal staining in a N10-congenic 129 animal. Expression in the superior colliculi and triangular septal nuclei (arrows) persist in B6 (E) and 129 (F) mice. The intensity of CNS staining appears less in F only because the plane of section is slightly different from B and intersects small portions of the nuclei. ti, terminal ileum; pc, proximal colon.
