Types of Asexual Reproduction All types of asexual reproduction produce identical offspring from a single parent.
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION – the production of new individuals from one parent by mitosis. New organisms are identical to the parent. BINARY FISSION – a type.
TYPES OF REPRODUCTION ASEXUAL VS SEXUAL. Let’s do some comparing!Prokaryote/Eukaryote?Unicellular/Multicellular?Heterotroph/Autotroph?Asexual/Sexual?
Genetics is the study of heredity.. Organisms resemble their parents because they inherit their genetic material from their parents.
Asexual Reproduction Many organisms reproduce asexually.
Asexual Reproduction Bacteria, Protists, Fungi, and Animals.
Section 5.4: Asexual Reproduction Biology. Types of Reproduction Sexual Reproduction Joining of gametes (sperm and eggs), one from each parent Genetically.
Asexual Reproduction Pg Introduction  Mitosis is the basis for reproduction by one parent  asexual reproduction  Common in microorganisms,
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION Involves only one parent Offspring are genetically identical to the parent.
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION. CHARACTERISTICS: - Only 1 parent required - Offspring are genetically identical to the parent. Offspring are called CLONES. ADVANTAGES:
GLE 3.3.D.a: Recognize and describe when asexual reproduction occurs, the daughter cell is identical to the parent cell (assuming no change in the parent.
Asexual Reproduction Chapter 5.2. Asexual Reproduction Main points – Only one parent is required – Asexually produced offspring, or clones, have identical.
Recall: All Living Things Share Certain Characteristics -living things are highly organized -living things obtain and use energy -living things grow and.
Reproduction a process whereby living things produce more living things All living organisms need to do it!!
Creating Clones. In The House of the Scorpion and The X-Files episode ‘Eve’, the stories focus on human clones that are produced by reproductive cloning.
Asexual Reproduction. ASEXUAL vs. SEXUAL  Requires only one parent organism  Offspring genetically identical to parent (clones)  No specialized cells.
Cloning – Science Fiction or Science Fact?
A comparison…. Any form of reproduction in which the offspring are genetically identical to the parent A single parent grows a clone or copy of itself.

Asexual Reproduction Look Ma! No Pa!

Asexual Reproduction Reproduction of organisms by mitosis • Only one parent required • Process is very quick • Offspring are clones - genetically identical • High risk of population collapse Fission Budding Spores Grafting Cloning

Fission Organism splits into two equal sized offspring Protist (Paramecium caudatum) Common in single celled organisms (like bacteria and protists; the nucleus replicates first then the cytoplasm divides through cytokinesis.

Fission - Sea Anemone Sea anemones are multi-celled organisms that commonly reproduce through fission to form dense colonies of clones

Budding (Hydra sp.) Offspring starts as a growth (bud) on the parent When old enough to survive on its own, bud detaches from parent Bud Mouth Tentacles Foot

Spores Spore cells produced by parent that are specialized for reproduction Each spore contains a nucleus and some cytoplasm Spore will develop into a new organism if it likes where it lands

Grafting Part of a plant is attached to the root system of another plant The two unite to form a new plant containing the roots of one and the stem and leaf structure of the other.

Cloning Clones are genetically identical to to the parent (a twin), except younger Clones have the same genes as the parent, but environmental factors affect how they are expressed. E.g. “Copy Cat”

Dolly – 1st Cloned Mammal, 1997

Cloning - Stem Cells Unspecialized cells that have the ability to reproduce itself and differentiate into a specialized cell Found in bone marrow, blood of umbilical cord, embryos etc.
