Do Now Color and label the cell worksheets in the basket. (get one animal cell sheet and one plant cell sheet)

Proteins Cellular processes are carried out by molecules. Proteins carry out most of the work of cells to perform the essential functions of life. One of the major functions of the cell is the production of proteins. The genetic information in DNA provides instructions for assembling protein molecules. In eukaryotic cells the nucleus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, vesicles, and the Golgi apparatus interact to produce, modify and transport proteins.

Plant Cells

Organelles Chloroplasts capture energy from sunlight and convert it into food that contains chemical energy in a process called photosynthesis Contain the green pigment chlorophyll

Organelles Cell wall: a strong supporting layer around the cell membrane

Organelles Central Vacuole filled with liquid; the pressure of the CV in these cells increases their rigidity (making it possible for plants to support heavy structures such as leaves and flowers)

Fungal Cells

Fungi Organisms such as mold, mushroom, yeast, and toadstools

Fungal Cells Cell wall made of chitin (not ____?____) May have several nuclei in a single cell NO Chloroplasts

Virtual Lab Worksheet

Skeletal Muscle Cell Structure and Function Multinucleated because they consist of several cells that have fused together. Contain many mitochondria because they require a lot of energy Contain the protein filaments (myosin and actin) which are responsible for the muscle contraction.

White Blood Cell Structure and Function A normal lymphocyte has a large, dark-staining nucleus with little to no cytoplasm if you think of the cytoplasm as a factory then what the cell needs to produce decides how big the factory/cytoplasm needs to be The ribosomes are involved in protein synthesis  generate large quantities of cytokines and immunoglobulins

Pancreatic Cell Structure and Function These exocrine cells show a strongly basophilic cytoplasm that represents the area occupied by the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The apical side of the cells is filled with zymogen granules that contain a variety of digestive enzymes  duodenum

Enzymes Review Mr. W Enzymes Video

Prokaryotic Cells Video: Prokaryotic v Eukaryotic

Create a Venn Diagram

Prokaryotic Cells Do not have a true nucleus The DNA in prokaryotic cells is not completely separated from the rest of the cell by a nuclear membrane (envelope) and is not arranged in linear strands (they have a singular circular chromosome). Compare to eukaryotic cells the DNA is organized into linear chromosomes and the chromosomes are separated from the cytoplasm by a nuclear membrane.

Prokaryotic Cells Prokaryotic cells differ from eukaryotic cells in other ways: Lack most of the other organelles that are present in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. Do not contain mitochondria but they can obtain energy from either sunlight or from chemicals in their environment. Generally much smaller than eukaryotic cells. Most prokaryotes such as bacteria are unicellular organisms.
