"Good to Great" Chapter 2: Level 5 Leadership   Chapter 2: Level 5 Leadership

Today’s agenda A reliable analysis of leadership Context: company in transition   Ex: Darwin Smith Level 5 leadership The characteristics of this type of leader

Darwin Smith •CEO of Kimberly-Clark (paper company) 1971-1991 •Was inside the company and not a celebrity leader •Hard worker, focused on his job •Knew how to make the right decisions and stick to them •"I never stopped trying to become qualified for the job"

Leadership Hierarchy 1) Highly Capable Individual- Makes productive contributions through talent, knowledge, skills, and good work. 2) Contributing Team Member- Contributes individual capabilities to the achievement of group objectives and works effectively with others in a group. 3) Competent Manager- Organizes people and resources toward the effective and efficient pursuit of predetermined objectives.

Leadership Hierarchy 4) Effective Leader- Catalyzes commitment to and vigorous pursuit of a clear and compelling vision, stimulating higher performance standards. 5) Level 5 Executive- Builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will. - fully developed Level 5 leaders embody all five layers

Professional Will The Transition from Good to Great Produce the best long-term results Set the standard Take credit for your downfalls

Professional Humility Public Interaction Organizational Perception No Personal Ambitions Successors

Level 5 Characteristics Quiet    Humble    Modest    Reserved Shy    Gracious    Mild-Mannered Self-effacing    Understated    - Described by co-workers "Level 5 leaders are a study in duality: modest and willful, humble and fearless." - Collins

Level 5 Leaders: described by Collins Smith - "An individual who blends extreme personal humility with intense professional will." Mockler - "His placid persona hid an inner intensity, a dedication to making anything he touched the best it could possible be...he simply couldn't imagine doing it any other way." Maxwell - "Ambition first and foremost for the company and concern for its success rather than for one's own riches and personal renown."

What you must remember •Humility + Will = level 5 leader •A level 5 leader is result and company oriented •Level 5 leaders set up their successors for greater success •Inside the company leaders are better than celebrity leaders in a transition phase •Some of us have the potential to become level 5 leaders we just need to know what to look for.
