從未畢業的學生 Ever since you were a demonstrator here we have touched upon this topic --- in your term, the "mathematization" of school mathematics --- in our many chattings in the lounge or in my office. We went into more detailed discussion of it during the period you worked on your PhD thesis. You gave many examples then. I guess, besides you yourself, I am perhaps the only other person who sided with you and who was talking on the same frequency as that of yours. I remember quite well the harsh treatment you received in an oral presentation for confirmation of candidature in a certain classroom in the Runme Shaw Building one Saturday morning. I remember having written several times in the progress reports to explain the significance and the mathematical content of your work, as I see it. But like you say, we talk on a different frequency from that of people in mathematics education. MK May 29, 2003
從未畢業的學生 Decades of learning experience tells me that my intelligence is only average, if not below average. … These years I learned very little (in others' term). Yet, I enjoy the process of internalizing what I have learned. Now I feel quite comfortable to answer queries concerning mathematising. … Please forgive me if I am pulling you towards "working in the wrong area" again. The process of struggling through my PhD has become very vague in my mind. On the contrary, I still retain the good memory of my four years with HKU Math Department when I acquired the most important of and about mathematics and its teaching, largely from you. Like many of your students, irrespective of whether they are successful with mathematics, I am really thankful to your sincere and whole-hearted coaching, without which I would have continued to be ignorant in mathematics, education, or even life. 從未畢業的學生 I am happy to know, which confirms what I believe, that you have thought deeply about the topic and hence have gained strong foothold on it. That is the way to acquire true learning and wisdom. I am old enough to be able to enjoy the luxury of "working in the wrong area". MK May 30, 2003
