Why?

Contents Introduction(s) Quantitative Research Methods Lecturer Students MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen

Learning Targets Quantitative Methods Academic Research Dealing with data Theoretical models Practical experience (in Excel and SPSS) Helpful tools for your daily work Academic Research structure and format of academic work (Literature sources)

“The Business Research Process” Cooper / Schindler

Learning Targets: Content “Quantitative Methods” enables students to analyze data and apply statistical analyses. Topics include: Presentation and interpretation of descriptive measures, applications of probability and the normal distribution in order to be able to properly apply confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing. The students shall be able to use simple and multiple regression models as well as time series analysis to applied cases from Economics and Business. MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen

Learning Outcomes After completion of this module students will have essentially improved their individual communication skills, self-confidence and effectiveness in rhetoric activities and are able to professionally apply presentation, moderation and negotiation techniques. Schmidt-bremen.de -> QM (MGM) You are highly motivated students  have to carry your individual workload: theory: 30 classroom h + 60 h individual work Schmidt-bremen.de -> QM (MGM) MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen

I want YOU … to make this YOUR class Assume responsibility for your – and all our Learning Outcomes Help me make the class better Quantitative meths.

How do we learn ?… Listening Watching Writing Thinking … interactive (team) work? -> after each class (incl. lunch break): 3 most important things I learned today (up to 3) questions Students are selcted at random at the beginning of the next class

Assessment… The assessment is a LEARNING PORTFOLIO. This is a type of assessment in which the students document their own responsibility for their learning process and learning outcome. Assessment - Required parts of the Learning Portfolio in this class are described in this document - they might be subject to change / discussion during the semester.

Teamwork 5 Teams – working together for the module Mixed gender / nationalities Tasks: Teamwork in class Homework (teams) Case study: presentations + handout MGM Quantitative Methods - P Schmidt, Hochschule Bremen

Correlations and Causality

Correlations and Causality

Correlations and Causality The more firemen fighting a fire, the bigger the fire is observed to be.   =>   Therefore firemen cause fire. Sleeping with one's shoes on is strongly correlated with waking up with a headache.   =>  Therefore, sleeping with one's shoes on causes headache. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation)

Correlations and Causality As ice cream sales increase, the rate of drowning deaths increases sharply.     => Ice cream causes drowning. With a decrease in the number of pirates, there has been an increase in global warming over the same period. => Therefore, global warming is caused by a lack of pirates. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation)
