Daresbury ESS In-Kind Contributions Peter McIntosh ASTeC Technical Division Head ESS Collaboration Board Meeting Daresbury Laboratory Wednesday 1st February 2017

Beam Transport Modules Delivery Scope Technology Department & ASTeC To design, procurement and assemble; 2 Prototypes 3 Test Chambers 75 LWUs 52 Beam pipe modules 2 Differential pumping systems 3 mobile installation cleanrooms Over the next four years we have been asked to delivery …

Linac Warm Unit (LWU) Sections BPMs BPMs BSM BCT BIF WS WS BPMs BPMs IPM STFC will integrate all 75 LWU’s

BTM Update Highlights 1st prototype already shipped to ESS. 2nd prototype complete ready to ship. 1st batch of beam pipes completed. Mobile cleanroom tender has now closed, awaiting award letters to go out. Issues ESS vacuum Tender has now been agreed by STFC and will be published soon – will push first LWU production vessel delivery back from Jan to Mar17. Other key status points/work in progress: 2nd CDR to cover the Dumpline, Dogleg and A2T area will take place in end of March early April, date TDB. BTM technical annex still awaiting final stage approval.

BTM Delivery 1st Prototype LWU at ESS 2nd Prototype LWU at Daresbury

High Beta Cavity Delivery Scope Niobium procurement: STFC to procure the high RRR Niobium for the high-β elliptical dressed cavities in agreement with the SRF collaboration for the ESS linac. Cavity fabrication of the 84 (+ 4) high-β elliptical dressed cavity in industry including: Cavity fabrication. Chemical processing. Heat treatment. Vacuum processing. High pressure rinsing. Field flatness and frequency tuning. Assembly of RF antenna and isolation valve in cleanroom. Shipment of dressed cavities to STFC. Procedure Qualification and Training: A qualified test procedure to be developed and implemented. A QA/QC system for individual tests in accordance with ESS policies. Trial tests to be performed and performance targets verified. Staff training in procedures and processes.

Elliptical Cavities Universal Cryomodule: Medium β = 0.67 Cryomodules are expensive and difficult to fabricate. Pick cavity  and number of cells: Optimize power transfer Optimize length Power in couplers is limited to 1200 MW (peak). Cavity and cryomodule design performed by CEA-Saclay (France). Medium β = 0.67 6 cell cavities Cavity length = 0.86 m 36 cavities in 8 cryomodules INFN-Milan to Procure and Test Maximum peak RF power = 800 kW High β = 0. 86 5 cell cavities Cavity length = 0.92 m 84 cavities in 22 cryomodules ASTeC and TD to Procure and Test 88 x high beta cavities Maximum peak RF power = 1100 kW

High Beta Cavities Update Highlights HBC testing Infrastructure critical path activities are still on schedule Cryostat manufacture on schedule Received first cryoplant components from Air Liquide Jan’17 Magnetic shield manufacture is on schedule Niobium tender is live, expect to close in mid-Mar’17 Achieved ISO5 in mock-up HBC insert cleanroom; confident achieving ISO4 target operationally. Issues Major risk mitigation (change request) approved by PMB to allow undressed cavity testing to validate BCP in industry – not in original STFC delivery plan – awaiting formal ESS approval. STFC procurement delays impacting delivery timescales: OJEU procurements on long-lead items – Nb and cavity procurements Significant financial risk still open due to large procurements (exchange rates, Nb market variation). Other key status points / work in progress: Final cavity procurement specification still being developed with CEA Saclay & ESS Quality control details for niobium supply and cavity production is still in development with ESS, CEA and INFN Standardisation of design reviews across infrastructure work packages in progress HBC technical annex still awaiting final stage approval.
