Mastery Based Education What do we want our students to know and do? Essential standards How will we know when they have learned it? Assessments What will we do when they have not learned it? Differentiation, Response to Intervention (RtI), special education What will we do to extend learning when they already know it? Differentiation, extended learning resources

Math @ 8:30 www.greatminds.org Huge resource! Eureka approaches math differently than the way you may have been taught in school. More conceptual, less computational Math facts fluency Sums & differences to 100 Place value, counting and comparing to 1,000 Addition and subtraction within 1,000 and word problems to 100 Foundations of multiplication and division Problem solving with lengths, money and data/graphs Telling time, shapes and an introduction to fractions www.greatminds.org Huge resource! http://greatminds.net/support/parents

Reading @ 9:45 Reading is 90 minutes. The first part is whole group instruction. Split into groups to focus on specific student needs. This differentiation is designed to meet students at their level to maximize their reading skills. We encourage daily reading of 15 minutes at home. There are many ways to read. Please create a reading routine at home. Remember to sign Reading Logs each night.

Reading Objectives Introduce students to a variety of texts Fiction and Nonfiction Develop basic comprehension strategies Phonics (letter sounds and patterns) Word recognition (sight words) Vocabulary (able to define and use) Students are expected to read at 92 words per minute by the end of the school year (reading fluency) INSTILL A LOVE OF READING!

Online Resources Math Reading http://grade2quacks.weebly.com/ Zearn: Supports math understanding XtraMath: Math fact fluency Reading ConnectED: Aligns with reading curriculum Lexia: Reading, phonics and vocabulary http://grade2quacks.weebly.com/ Look for digital Wednesday Express on the district website.

Student Expectations Students: Come to school ready to listen, learn, and try their best! Be prepared: glasses, clothes, shoes, after school plans, library books. Keep important school items in their backpacks.

Parent Expectations Parents: Establish a supporting role for your child’s daily work routine. Establish expectations for success: Reading Logs, spelling practice, where and how to keep school materials.

Teacher Expectations Teachers: Help each child reach their full potential! Communicate responsibilities to students and parents. Keep parents informed through ClassDojo and Wednesday Express. Teach the Common Core State Standards Leave your expectations for us on the poster by the door.

It takes a village… It does take a village to raise a child! Your child will make mistakes. We expect mistakes and try to turn errors into learning opportunities. We look forward to working with you and helping your child to be as successful as possible now, and for the future! GOAL: Home to school connection as strong as possible. Big team working together

Specialty Teachers Library: Jeanne Sanford 1 Non-Fiction 1 book at their reading level 1 Choice Counselor: Aaron Schieffelbein 2nd Step weekly Parenting Classes: November 1st, 8th, & 15th School Psychologist: Shahna Paul Testing & Screening Special Education Teacher: Geri Ray Reading Specialist: Patty Pancheri Extended Learning Facilitator: Karen Tripepi

Your child is like a car The major parts of their lives are the wheels. (School, Family, Friends, Extra Curriculars, etc…) When a wheel falls off because of instability, the entire car suffers! The entire child suffers, and then the other wheels can’t perform as well either Create a routine and schedule They don’t have to worry about as many things, if they can have a consistent expectation of when meals and school work will be done. Active parenting causes stability
