Lehi High School 4th Annual “Battle of the Books” Language Arts

The Battle of the Books What is the Battle of the Books? A typical "Battle" is an after-school tournament or game in which “Battle of the Books” teams earn points by answering questions about the books on a master book list. They play several rounds, each against different teams. Requirements: Sign up and get on a team of 4 Read at least one book off of each term’s list. Become an expert on your chosen book. Show up with your team to all three qualifying tournaments this year with your teacher in October, January, and March.

The Qualifiers and Championship What do I have to do to prepare for the Battle of the Books? Read your book off of the master list. Using your book, create 10 factual questions about different moments in your story. The questions (and answers) should be scattered throughout your book. You will also need to include page #s What will the qualifier look like? A Q & A format. The tournament will be held in your teachers’ classrooms at the end of each term. If your team wins their class tournament, they move onto the school tournament in May.

Incentives and Rewards Class Rewards This counts as your second book report! You receive extra credit Championship Rewards “Battle of the Books” Championship trophy Name immortalized on a plaque (I know a guy) You get to fly out to Washington DC and meet the President Raffle—Battle of the Books Books, Posters, Gift Cards, Free stuff Food—Pizza, donuts, and drinks Also they get smarter and the personal satisfaction that they’ve met their goals.
