Department Mission Statement The mission of the World Language Department at Seaholm High School is to educate students in the acquisition of a new language and its respective culture. In our classes, our students learn to listen, read, write and speak in the target language, while also gaining relevant cultural insight and experience. This learning will help students to become reflective, compassionate, and honorable members of our interdependent global society.  Our staff is committed to teaching the 5 C's of Foreign Language Learning, as outlined in the National Standards in Foreign Language Education: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.

Course Offerings The World Language Department offers four language programs: Chinese - 中文 Levels 1, 2, 3, 4 Honors, AP, Perspectives French - Français Levels 1, 2, 3, 4 Honors, AP, Perspectives Spanish - Español Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 4 Honors, AP, Perspectives American Sign Language Levels 1, 2 with possible expansion into 3

Program levels The World Language Department offers four program levels: Graduation Requirement Levels 1 & 2 Fulfills graduation requirement* Honors Levels 3 & 4 Expected by selective universities Advanced Placement AP Course Possible college credit Perspectives Perspectives Course Immersion-type experience * Depends on point of entry into the language program

Program start Students may enter high school in levels 1, 2 or 3 of a language, depending on the particular language, prior experience and current proficiency Incoming students’ placement should follow the middle-school teacher’s recommendation There are no placement exams for incoming students Students who have no experience in a language sign up for level 1 of that language Students who have at least one year in a language may place in level 2 or higher in high school Questions? Language Graduation requirement The graduation requirement for languages in Birmingham Public Schools is two credits of the same language, with the last credit taken in grades 9-12 and being higher than the last successful middle-school experience Examples: Level 1 in middle school, Level 2 in high school = graduation requirement met Levels 1 and 2 in middle school, Level 3 in high school = graduation requirement met Levels 1 and 2 in middle school, Level 2 in high school = graduation requirement not met Student needs to successfully complete level 3 or higher Level 1 of French and Level 1 of ASL = graduation requirement not met Student needs to successfully complete level 2 or higher of either, French or ASL Other situations?
