Reactive species (RS) and inflammatory mediators activate the transcription factor Nrf2, which leads to release of antioxidants and detoxifying enzymes. Interactions among antioxidant molecules are essential in the defense response. Vitamin C contributes to the regeneration of oxidized tocopherol, allowing it to regain its function as an antioxidant. Vitamins C and E help to regenerate glutathione disulfide to glutathione. SOD reduces O2− to H2O2, which is then converted to H2O through oxidation of glutathione.
