Definitions ADDITIONAL DATA OUTLIER Data added to a set after initial work is done OUTLIER A value in a set that is very different from others. Outliers affect Mean, Median, Mode, and Range. Example of an Outlier: 2, 3, 5, 7, 4, 99

Example 1 Find Mean, Median and Mode of data in table. U.S. Winter Olympic Medals Won Year 2006 2002 1998 1994 1992 1988 1984 1980 Medals 25 34 13 11 6 8 12 Find Mean, Median and Mode of data in table. Mean = 15.25, Median = 12.5, Mode = 13 Add 10 medals in 1976 and 8 in 1972. Then find the new Mean, Median, and Mode. Mean = 14, Median = 11.5, Mode = 8 and 13 (Mean down, Median down, Mode increased)

Example 2 Find Mean, Median and Mode. Ages of Climbers on Mt. Everest in 2001 33 31 32 28 Find Mean, Median and Mode. Mean = 36, Median = 32, Modes = 31 and 33 When the last age is added the Mean is up 4.7, the Median is up 0.5, but Mode is the same. The Mean was most affected by the Outlier.

Example 3 Smartphone prices in dollars are 175, 180, 130, 150, 180, 500, 160, 180, 150, and 160. What dollar amount are most of these around? Find the Mean, Mode, and Median. Mean = 196.50, but most phones ~ 160 so the Mean does not describe the data best. Mode = 180, but that only represents 3 out of the 10 values, so that does not describe the data well Median = 167.50, which matches the majority.

Example 4 Find the Mean, Median, and Mode. Car Colors in Parking Lot Blue Red Green White Black Find the Mean, Median, and Mode. Mean and Median are impossible since we can’t average words, or find the middle value. Mode = red, since that color shows up most. Assignment = p294 #1-3
